Im loving these XR builds, nice to see them getting a second chance to run the trails. Your bike is the pushrod engine and docs is the OHC one? Will that make much of a difference in power? Can't wait for you to get yours running, I'm living vicariously

I don't know if the power is much different. I believe the pushrods build power at a lower rpm.
It is more than enough for my needs. Considering the weight difference between the xr and the gy it should feel like alot more power. In total I should be at about $150 invested into this bike. Not taking into account that I already had the engine. At least my GY will live on. This engine has about 17K kms on it. |

I'm real excited about this one .
I was lucky to find the OHC engine. It's the only one I've come across since I've been looking. All I can say is that taking into account the weight and suspension and gearing advantage, the Lifan XR would leave a Q or a Lifanoid WAY behind on the trail. The disadvantage I was at, as far as expense goes, is that I started with a free bike but no motor. Not including my time, I think the project will end up costing me about $700, maybe a little less. Not bad for The Dirt Rat!

Kato, the pushrod engines that we have in our Beasts rock! If you install a new Mikuni 30mm and a free breathing air filter and exhaust, your bike will be impressive.

The exhaust and carb will have to wait. I don't get to ride much and when I do it is in an area surrounded by houses so noise is a big factor.
The stock carb and exhaust will have to do. I did pick up a knock off UNI filter. |

That's the way I'm running and it works GREAT!
The stock XR exhaust is plently free flowing, it sounds to me. Very meaty and unrestricted sounding. I wouldn't want it any louder, that's for sure. The Uni filter adds some intake noise, but it sounds kinda cool. 8)

Do you have the stock XR pipe and muffler Kato? I was referring to a free-flowing exhaust as compared to the stock Beast junk.

Yes I do. That reminds me that I will need a gasket.

IMHO the stock Honda pipe is great. Just add some BBQ paint and you're good to go!

Already have the paint someplace. I bought it for another project.
Since it is still apart I will have to give it a coat. |

I'm jumping into this conversation a bit late so bear with me.
I 'm looking at a 86 xr250 r with a blown motor. from what I see it should be a easy fit to put a 250 push rod motor( well 229cc) into a xr frame with minimal wiring issues. When it comes to the electrical do I need the complete witing harness from a GY bike to do this or will it wire into the honda system? |

I am not sure the 200 will fit the 250 frame/exhaust/intake etc. The '250' OHV's are really 230's and related to the 200's not the 250's.
I could be wrong... The Lifan type motor comes with it's own CDI and RR and coil and does not plug into the XR's harness. Fabricating your own is not hard. Also, for about $40, Hooper Imports will sell you a premade harness. That might be the best way to go. IF the motor fits (I'd call Larry Hooper) don't worry about the wiring. We can help you through it. See my threads on my Lifan XR200 aka The Dirt Rat.

mmm I was hoping that the XR250 motor would swap out for a lifan 230 push rod or overheadcam motor. I do have access to a water cooled 249 cc loncin bike engine also but that may prove to be a lot more work.

It might be. Look at Hooper's websites he has some measurements of mounting points you may want to compare to. I'd not bother with going to a L/C conversion, THAT sounds like a lot more work, and a 'simple' conversion is pretty involved as it is.

Not sure about the mounting points on the 250. W&G may know more about those.
Wiring does not look to be too bad. If I wasn't wanting the e-start I could have used the stock wiring harness. |
