Well, poop. Riding has been somewhat curtailed for the next few weeks. Besides going back on the road again, the stator on the CX is going through it's death throes. All the problems I THOUGHT I was having with carbs were the low speed coil going south. I can still ride the bike to the office for a bit, the missing and sputtering problem doesn't show up until the engine gets good and warm. But long rides are done for the time being.
There is an up side to all this. I called Custom Rewind(highly recommended, BTW) down in Alabama today and spoke with the owner. Because I actually have another stator(toasted)out of the bike that I can use as a core and because he doesn't move many of the OEM G47 stators anymore, he cut me a heck of a deal on a new one. Now the real downside. I need to drop and split the engine to replace the stator. Just a little weekend project. Smart money would insist on replacing the R&R, too. Then I'll have an entirely new electrical system.

How much does a typical reg/rec normally cost?

Anywhere from $15 to $200. Either of those choices is a bad move. I'm springing for this MOSFET unit.

It's too bad you need to split the crankcase to replace the regulator/rectifier. I have never heard of that situation before.

Its due to the longitudinal layout of the CX engines.

Splitting the case is probably a misnomer, I'm removing the rear cover. That is still part of the crankcase, tho. Also houses the water pump, starter, gear shift and output shaft.
The stator is that funky brown thing. Either the coil with the metal plate or the one directly opposite it is the culprit. The actual replacement will only take about an hour. Six to eight for everything else. I'm taking a couple vacation days next month to do it.

Now I understand. You need to remove a crankcase cover to replace the stator, not the regulator/rectifier. On my bikes I can replace the stator by removing the left crankcase cover. However, because of the longitudinal orientation of the CX500 engine, the engine must be dropped, and a rear crankcase cover must be removed.

Bingo, Spud. I should have read that a bit closer. As to the reg/rec, piece o' cake. I just need to pull the left side cover to access that.

The old Goldwings have the same layout for the stator, engine must be dropped to remove back cover for access. Common malady on the old wings as well. That's why so many people just do the alternator conversions on them. Although ultimately I'm guessing it would take about the same amount of time for the conversion as dropping the motor and replacing the stator. I guess they are "future proofing" it though.

I've seen that conversion and keeping it tucked in the dusty cabinet file of my mind just in case I do end up with an old 'wing someday(Mrs. C is starting to soften). It's too bad that something like that isn't possible with the CX without a total redesign of the cooling system and frame. Just too compact of a package.

Stator is on it's way. Unfortunately, I may not have time to swap it out until Labor Day Weekend now. This working for a living sure has some downsides.
