Hawk Range
One of the main concerns of any overland bike is range(miles/tank). I have about 250 miles on this little gem and am happy to report going the distance shouldn't be a problem. It took 2.057 gallons to cover 156 miles. That's 75.83 MPG on a fully loaded bike(me and about 40lbs of weight in the bags). My tank holds 3.31 of fuel. That's a 250 mile range. I tempted not to change the carb or the sprockets.

Wolf trax, what modifications and sprockets do you currently have installed, as well how much throttle do you have left when cruising in fifth gear at 55mp/h?

It's completely stock. I have a Mikuni, jets, 17T counter and 45T drive sprocket all sitting in a box. At 55 indicated on the flat the throttle is approx at 2/3rds. Cracked wide open it will push a tad over 60 but its pushing it. Going to run it stock for the first 500 miles. The engine seems to be getting looser and running better everytime I take it out.

i have the same as wolf cept currently running a 16 for breakin.
i am in the Ozarks with a lot of curvy, hilly (some quite steep) dirt, paved, and broken rock/Large gravel over seriously sharp edged rock roads/trails. as is, the bike is geared just fine, but on those rare events when i am forced to take a section of faster secondary roads i find that once in 5th, there is no need to shift down for hills, even the steeper ones. I am frankly surprised this little motor has sooo much bottom/mid range torque, and will therefore start upping the gear ratio, once i complete breakin , until i am at least required to drop to fourth on one of the larger hills. As it is I am showing 45 to 50 in 5th at what "feels" like just below the torque peak of the motor.

75? Dunno where that came from, not me. I'm expecting more towards 60-65 without grenading the motor.

Oh, mpG yeah I can see that. No problem. Got the mikuni iand jets in box. Stock carb at 1100 feet or so runs just fine for me.

Wolf or Seer--how accurate is the speedo? Chinese bikes are notorious for crappy speedos.

I don't really know. I based my observations on 10% error. So when the speedo says 55 I'm reporting that as 50. This weekend I'll get a GPS comparison.

Okie dokie, put a few more miles on the Hawk and have to say I'm really digging this little bike. Wanted to assess the accuracy of the speedometer with the GPS and found at 60mph indicated the GPS said 52.2, 13% error. While I was at it, I figured I might as well see what top speed is on a totally stock bike with 15T/50T gearing. The result:

Took the time to swap out the 15T with the 17T and take her for another top speed run over the same course. The best thing about this bike is it's utter simplicity. The hardest part of the swap was putting the cover back on.

Yup,way more relaxed. This bike doesn't make a lot of power at your higher RPM's just al lot of noise. Will try the 45T after carb swap .

Looking forward to reading about both. I know we discussed what extras you should carry, but thinking of your carb, you will want jets for the different elevations you will encounter in the mountains in Mexico and C. and S. America.
Forgot to ask--what 45T rear did you get; for what bike is it made for?
