Wow, I definitely need to rejet. I could barely get 60 out of mine!

I’ll have about an hour free to work on it this evening. I wonder if that’s enough time for a carb newbie to get a jet swap done?

Never mind. I found a good instructional video on YouTube and I’ll definitely save that for another day. I’ll just install the phone mount tonight. lol

Here’s the clip for anyone interested. I believe this is the same carb on the X22R.

The rejetting is a must but also getting some miles on it and breaking the engine in. No need to shim the needle. Start with a 105 main and idle mixture 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated. That should get you close. I'm running a 108 main but i did remove the cat. Now back to my regularly scheduled program for today. Back out for another ride.

Even after replacing the starter on my riding mower, repairing my push mower and cutting my grass I still found time to swap out my carb to the PE30. The intake Herbie sent me wouldn't work so swapped intakes with the Hawk which fit better so all worked out. It took me a while to get it tuned. I started with a 38 pilot but would idle rough. I tried a 40 and a 42 and made no difference. I noticed if I shut off the fuel it would start running smoother and faster. Turned out the float was set too high so once I got that set the 42 pilot worked perfect at 1 3/4 turns out. I installed a 110 main and took her out for a ride. The engine will rev to 10k quick. Throttle response is so much better. I decide to take it out on the highway for about 10 or 11 miles. I was able to cruise between 70-75 mph easily. I took her up to 81mph briefly. Did I mention I love this bike. Lol
I also removed the air box and installed a Nibbi pod filter. I also hooked up the remote choke. That wasn't a direct fit. I had to cut the lead ball off because it was too big and I soldered a small ball on the end and is working so far.

The jetting is at least consistent. I can float between a 35 or 38 pilot depending on the air temps. I still think my jetting is thrown off by the longer intake I am using though.

So, without any head work, would you say the PE30 is a good upgrade?

Yes it's definitely an improvement. Much better throttle response.

I know it's an OHC engine and not the OHV CG of the Hawk, but I would be pretty confident in saying the PE30 would be good even for a Hawk without any head work then. It might not be as dramatic as when I went from the PZ30B to the PE30, but I don't doubt for a second that it wasn't still very noticeable.

Besides, it is hard to argue with how easy the idle mixture and idle speed are to access.

So is this intake, carb, and air filter setup what you’d recommend for this bike with head porting and shaving planned in the future?

Do you have links to all the parts?

Yes this is the one. I bought the last one the seller had but will look for another and link it. The intake I robbed off my Hawk so I would have to find another link to that one too.

Awesome, thanks.

Man, parts for this bike are so inexpensive. I love it.

I need to change my sprocket and get a little more power out of the bike to be satisfied though. I can’t even maintain speed on gentle hills with this current sprocket. Luckily, I think I’m leaving some power on the table running rich and I’m happy to buy aftermarket parts needed to get the power up a bit.

And you were right... the brakes are much much improved now that the oils have burned off of them.

Well i took the bike out for a little ride yesterday. I got about two blocks down the road and she died. I thought i might of forgotten to turn the fuel back on but not the case. I pulled off to the side of the road and she cranked right back up but would only idle and would die as soon as i would give it throttle. So I proceeded to take the carb off and open the bowl to check for trash only to discover i didn't have an Allen wrench to fit the carb screws. So i managed to limp it home at idle speed. When i got home and opened it up i found one little piece of grass that managed to find it's way into the main jet. Needless to say I have included a complete set of Allen wrenches to my tool kit. No worry, I enjoyed the rest of the day riding and self isolating myself. I will need to fine tune my idle a little more. It seems a little rich at idle.
I took the bike to work this morning. I was planning on taking all week but the Governor ordered everyone to stay home starting tonight. I should have plenty of time to work on it the rest of the week.

I received and install new mirrors last night. These are real nice and heavy duty. The stock mirrors got to the point that one mirror i had to constantly adjust and the other vibrated and rattled. I'll post pictures late today when i get home of them installed. These are very tight and will no way move no mater how fast you're driving. At first it thought they were fixed because they were so hard to move. No plastic here. lol
