All good advice. Like 2LZ said, take it apart and double check that everything looks in order. One problem I have had with reassembly of the CV carb is that the paper thin rubber edges of the vacuum piston get kinked or unseated before I can screw the cover back on causing leaks and poor idling. Make sure the edges are seated in the circular groove under the cover.

Make sure the idle mixture screw hasn't backed itself out. If I back out my idle screw more that 2 turns it becomes so loose it will nearly completely unscrew itself after a good ride. I have used a very small dose of loc tite to prevent this.

With my XF I have to give it some throttle for about 10-20 seconds after a cold start or it will die, in hot weather that is. In cold weather it starts up and idles like it should right away.

Head Scratching SSR250FX stock seat comfort

dh,
How is the ride ability of the stock seat on the 250FX? Is it comfortable enough for rides longer than an hour.
Do you know of any after-market seats that are available for the bike?
Did you have to make any alterations to the stock seat? Or purchase a seat pad or sheep skin to improve comfort?

The SSR and Qlink share the same basic seat and I can ride on mine for multiple hours. For a banana shaped thing, I find it quite comfy....and I'm currently 220lbs.
With seats though, everyone's different.

The stock Ssr/Qlink seat is great in my opinion. I have done a number of 3 to 4 hour rides with no regrets. I commute 2 hours one way every wednesday and it is not bad.. A windshield might be a nice at some point though.

If I wanted a modified seat I would take my spare to an upholstry place. I have bought a replacement seat from taobao before. I have not done any mods to the seat but I am sure a sheepskin would help.

Doh! Questions about SSR XF250

I could not find this information in the XF's User Manual Or SSR website.
How many valves in the head of the XF250?, 2 or 4? How many miles to first valve adjustment and then how many miles between subsequent valve adjustments? Do you have to remove the exhaust pipe from the engine to adjust the valves? How many miles between oil and filter changes? Is the oil filter a canister or a replaceable paper filter? Is there more than one oil filter to change with each oil change?
How about the in-tank fuel filter, how often to change, and how many miles between changes?
SSR will not provide this information. Even when I spoke to them over the phone and via emails! They are not very friendly or helpful! You'd think they would be helpful to potential buyers?

See if you can find a service manual for a Suzuki TU250 as it has the same basic engine. Yours doesn't have the EFI the Suzuki does but everything else should transfer over. Here's some quick answers, though.

2 valves, exhaust and intake. Accessed through the head cover caps.

Exhaust pipe stays on.

1 oil filter, paper, located on the right side of the engine under the round cover with three nuts. Some covers actually say 'oil filter' on them. Use a magnet (like on the end of a pick up tool) to pull the filter out.

No maintenance on the tank screen as long as the fuel going in is clean.

Oil changes depend on how many miles and where. Check the Suzuki manual for more accurate information.

The tank does not have to be removed for valve adjustments. I added an in line fuel filter below the petcock that I have never replaced.

According to the very sloppy owners manual(which I don't trust) that comes with the bike, the first oil change is 1,000km and 6,000 thereafter; It actually doesn't mention valves at ALL!!!! I go with the Haynes manual and Suzuki TU250 maintenance intervals. Oil change and valve adjustment every 3,000 miles.

There are some good Tu250 service tutorials I have referenced. Seat/tank removal is not required for the SSR but these videos are great. I am no expert, but I have gotten valve adjustments down to about 10 minutes.

Doh! Carb

OK, So i'm fucking stupid. When I was rejetting my carb a couple weeks ago, i screwed up and drilled something I thought was the plug (The diagram with the sigma kit was shit) and drilled something I wasn't supposed to. I think i'm going to end up having to get a new carb. Is there an actual Keihin or Mikuni CV or other carb that I can use as a direct replacement? I could get another Chinese knockoff one, but I'd rather get an actual Japanese. Any advice on a direct fit replacement? or at least fit on the intake side and I'll just put a pod style filter on.

These things happen. Depending on what was drilled, it might be easy to just replace parts. Forget calling SSR though, they only sell complete carburetors for around $200. I have not looked for a mikuni replacement but I would consider buying another Teikei on Taobao for about $50 and keep the original for parts. Check out the links below.

Rocky mountain ATV carries parts for the Teikei carb. Do a parts search by make and model; select a 2005 Yamaha TW200 and you will be able to pull up a diagram with parts numbers for the TK carb:

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your responses! I haven't had time to order a new one yet, i've been balls-deep in my remodeling my bathroom - huge project, as i had to rip all the walls out, the floors, subfloors, joists, new plumbing, etc.

Do you guys have any recommended jet setups on this? I've drilled several 3/4" holes in the top of the airbox, also cut out the spark arrestor in the exhaust and drilled another 3/4" hole inside the muffler. I'll get a new header pipe and exhaust pipe at some point when I can afford it. It's been like 250 bucks or more every time i make a trip to Home Depot. lol

Good luck. I have been remodeling my bathroom for about a year now. I did tile floors, vanities, sinks, back splash, new drains and water lines. All that's left is paint and I have been dragging my feet on getting that started.

After testing 132.5 and 135 main jets for a while and settled with a 130 which the jet kit included. Not sure what size pilot jet the kit included, but it works well. I have 1 shim under the needle. I have done similar modifications to the air box and muffler.

A first for me on the xf250 today.... I was actually able to pass another motorcycle on the highway going over the mountains to LA. I though my eyes were playing tricks on me so I slowed down and sure enough it was an Xt250. Poor guy was getting passed by big rigs and didn't look amused at all. Not even a wave! A rare occasion for sure. The list of vehicles I can pass going over the mountains is short; basically big rigs, air cooled vws and jeep wranglers.

Back in the mid-90s, I had a '90 or '91 DR250. My friend was a better rider than me, so would ride it while I drover my '86 Capri 5.0 (remember that Mustang twin?). I swear, that thing could hit 90+ when I paced him on the 118 a couple times...this was when I lived in Northridge (the L.A. connection, lol). Once, we were 'racing' side by side up Tampa Ave. at about 75 MPH (no one said we were the smartest guys) and we passed a guy in the third lane who was on some kind of sports bike like he was standing still--we stunned him because of the curvy nature of that street and he did not get into the 'race' and try to catch up, but your story kind of reminded me of that besides the fact your engine is a Suzuki-ish 250. Now I want an XF even more...
