Yes, that is the trigger coil, and no it doesn't have to be lined up with the stator coil under it.

Please tell us about your procedure. What steps did you take? How did you confirm TDC?

Hello,
To measure TDC I turned the flywheel until the TDC mark on the flywheel aligned with the mark on the casing. I also made sure that both valves where closed on top to indicate the compression stroke. I used a feeler gauge and looked up the proper clearance for valve lash.

After re-reading your original comments, I realized I failed to ask about the battery. Do you have a good battery to work with? Don't expect it to kick to life with a dead battery.

I have seen one where the flywheel key was not completely sheared but damaged (sort of half way sheared) and just that small amount allowed the timing to be off enough my lawnmower would not start. a $.10 woodruff key and it ran great for years to come.

If not the flywheel key. What about the timing chain itself could it be stretched beyond the capacity for the tensioner to tighten it?

That pic is of a horizontal engine, not the GY200 as stated by the OP.

"Hello Everyone,
I have a 2007 Lifan 200gy with a major timing issue."
