Need a little more speed or power any advice?

Ok just bought my brother a Tao Tao 50cc scooter, its a ATM 50-A1.
He is trying to make it a little faster if possible.
Can anyone give me an idea of what is needed to do so?

How fast does he want to go? Any big hills?

You can change the roller weights in the variator pulley. If more power is needed then I would suggest a big bore kit with a larger carb.

Safe speed on these is maybe 45mph.

there are a few hills he travels in his commute to softball and such.
40-45 would be his goal.

Sounds like he will need to give it a power boost to be able to hold those speeds.

Roller weights are cheap, but you either get speed or takeoff power. Most of these scooters are someplace in between.

If you set it up for speed he may be able to go 40mph, but it will not pull a hill very well. Likely 20mph up a hill.

Before changing the weights and adding a big bore kit, you might choose to optimize the intake and exhaust. My Pastor had a 50cc Saga scooter, and the intake was very restrictive (the exhaust was a joke).

Check out the thread that details it: http://www.chinariders.net/modules.p...=12294&start=0

Ok I will look into that.
Also if I go big bore kit route can you guys recommend one that fits on the tao tao scooter?
Also is this really hard to do? Will I be able to complete my self if I have very little knowledge on engines?

It's kind of a big deal to install a big bore kit if you have no previous engine experience. Start with intake and exhaust upgrades, and then evaluate. You might be perfectly happy with it.

www.scrappydogscooters.com has parts.

Weld has made some good suggestions. A big bore kit is pretty involved for a novice. Intake and exhaust is about a 2 on a 10 scale.

As usual, I agree with Weld and Kato.

I would start under the cvt cover , some 50cc come with a washer in between the variator pulleys . Some call it a restrictor , what it does it stops the variator pulleys from closing all the way up , and the opposite for the clutch pulley . This maybe a no cost no parts tweek/mod . You will need an impact gun to get it opened .

The fan pulley is larger diameter then the inner pulley , you can get a larger diameter variator pulley(inner) . Beyond that you can start with roller or slider weights .

Changing the muffler and intake will require jetting adjustments , this can get very tricky . BBK's work well but will not get you anymore topend without gearing changes .

I see this thread is a few weeks old I hope you see this in time .
