new owner of brianw's lifan, need some info

Hey guys I've been tinkering with the bike when I can. I decided to order a new cdi the other day, but while I'm waiting for it another friend of mine brought up a point about the stator on another bike and how when it goes bad it displays the same symptoms this bike is showing. Very weak spark output when it does get spark and a no start condition. Just wondering if any of you gy5 200 owners out there have had any stator problems?

Thanks Shane

Stator tends to be on/off...it works or it doesn't. The voltage required to produce spark isn't much and it's not working the stator particularly hard to get it, which means that the failure to that particular coil has to be rather catastrophic and uncommon.

What I did to confirm my CDI as being the culprit was run a live ground from the kill switch wire. You have to cut the black/white stripe wire off the protion of the harness (you'll have to repair it later) and run a jumper that you can ground out. While cranking, touch the jumper to a ground and take it off...it you get an nice pretty arc then you're building charge but you're not getting the proper trigger from the CDI. On mine I could actually ground it a few times while cranking and get the thing to start sparking right.

Some bikes will let you do this test just by flipping the kill switch but a lot kill the starter with the kill switch off.

Thanks Shane
Yes, I needed to replace the stator on my Zongshen 200GY-2 motorcycle. Several weeks after replacing a bad CDI unit, my bike started having electrical problems. Using my digital multimeter, I discovered the CDI unit was not receiving enough voltage from the stator. I replaced the stator, and my electrical problems disappeared. I don't know the reasons, but I have heard a bad CDI unit can cause a stator to fail.

Thanks guys!I'm still extremely new to motorcycles and especially China bikes, I kind of assumed that the stator may be a problem since I saw the wonderful wiring on someone elses thread on here. But thanks again, I'm going to test the bike again after I get the cdi.
