New Magician Owner - Chain question

So I was changing out the front sprocket from a 15T to a 17T and find that there is not quite enough chain.

Does anyone have a short piece of 428 chain laying around?

--Or, does anyone know what rear sprocket fits?
The bolt pattern is 6 bolts on a 140mm diameter, at least that's what I measured

You should definitely check out a Motocheez video on the topic since he has extensive knowledge and experience with the Hawk, and since he was literally given a Magician, has some knowledge with that bike. I am not sure if he kept filming videos of the Magician, meaning if he got around to changing the rear sprocket? I am assuming the hub is the same as the Hawk, and the plethora of Honda XL185 sprockets available should work on your Magician, but you will want to find this out for certain. The problem--not too many people with the Magician around here...

The Magician does have a different rear pattern than the Hawk - 6 bolt vs. 4 bolt

I don't think anyone here has been going over the Magician in any depth. I think they are less 'useful' in the dirt (obviously, by design, they are far more street oriented) so far fewer people have bought them.

What size rear sprocket comes on the bike? It looks like it has far less teeth than the Hawk.

If it is a 45 tooth, then that should be great for street riding; 17/45 should move you along swiftly. Then again, are you trying to improve street speeds? Then again, once more

why would you buy a Magician over a Hawk if you wanted it to be more of a dual-sport? I would use it as is (after buying a new chain) and see how the combo works for you. My guess is you won't need or want a new rear.

The stock sprocket has 44 or 45 teeth
With the 15T front, it feels like the engine is screaming at 40 mph

Two reasons I picked the Magician:
I think the styling is Killer
I have a 30" inseam so seat height is an issue

Considering how wide the bolt pattern is there may not be much available with fewer teeth

Just a suggestion, change the front out with a 16T. You might find that you like it and it's cheaper than changing out the rear. Remember, a tooth change in the front is close to changing three in the rear.

Just an observation in regard to the picture you posted. If you took it after the sprocket change, your wheel can move forword more.

Also, please give us the actual size of the front and rear tires. I've looked at probably five websites and they're listed anywhere from 18" to 21" for the front and 17" or 18" for the rear. Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

I replaced my front sprocket from a 15 tooth to a 17 tooth with the original chain tight fit but I was able to give it the necessary slack, so far I have not had any problems.

the smaller rear wheel is contributing to the low gearing also. the hawk with 15/50 stock gears and 18" rear wheel is probably about the same as your ratio and the hawk would pull the front wheel up with ease with that gearing it was just right for off road trails but not the highway. i went to a 17 on front and it helped a lot now i can still trail and road also.

be sure and turn the adjuster to "0"

Thanks Ascot. Most of the websites are listing the sizes as 21" and 18" which are the Hawk's.

Why not buy another chain? 428H (H:Heavy duty. Not the standard type found in most stock chonda) is <$20 [OKish choice] KMC:Taiwanese brand that made in PRC / Unibear: Chinese brand...
