What Sprocket combo did you happen to go with? What are your impressions of the gearing? Do you have enough low end power, how is your top end? Etc... Thanks.

Is your speed due to the 520 conversion, or the size of your new sprockets? Mine came with 15/46 sprockets, 428 chain, and the bike is a 150cc. I asked about a 520 conversion at my local bike shop. The mechanic said it's cheaper to keep it 428, but get a better chain. I've waited a month to get my 17 tooth ordered, and still don't have it. They are backed up, but I've waited too long  I think the 17/428 is the same size as the 14/520, and rotates at the same speed. I don't want to change my rear sprocket if I don't have to. Is there a reason I should change to 520? My bike is smaller and I don't weigh much. If I'm going to do it, I'd like to do it all at once, right, the first time. :D The bike shop did give me 4 free licence plate lightbulbs today. :D :D

I'm about ready to do the 520 conversion myself. Unclejo3 let us know which sprocket sizes you used, and how much did it cost for everything. Speed and rpms would be nice also.

I'm also doing a 520 conversion. I hope to have mine done tonight. Getting ready to eat dinner now, so I should have pictures of it along with my new XR200R shock install later. My sprockets were purchased from Bruce at Endless Journey Cycles in Ohio. The sprockets are 11T front and 35T rear with a 520 D.I.D. chain. I was concerned about using a master link chain but I was assured it was fine on this type of motorcycle.

I have $135 in my conversion but this also includes a new Uni-filter aircleaner.

You will find your chain stretch and subsequent sprocket wear will all but disappear when you make your 520 conversion.

About a year ago, I finished the XR/Lifan 200, running 520 o-ring chain. 1 enduro season later with my lightweight daughter on board, and many hours of riding it myself, and I havent had to adjust the chain yet. It may be due for a little tweak, but far from actually needing the adjustment.

The Lifan makes plenty of power for "fat guy fun" and scoots along well with a lightweight rider, but not enough to challenge a 520 chain.

There is a reason Honda spec'd 520 chain on the XR200!

Now that I have both of our bikes engines firmly mounted in I wonder how much of a problem the chain will be.We, like many others, went thru a few chain adjustments but it seemed more do to the engine moving.

I noticed most of our chain slack was from the engine moving around and being pulled from the torque of the chain on it but now I feel the chain is really going to be (sorry  ) the weakest link.

I may do the 520 conversion in the future.

Here is my 520 chain conversion, all finished up! I may need to remove another link.

Question:
On a 150cc, with 125LB rider, riding street only. Would a 428 D.I.D. chain stretch much?

well, im 145lbs on a 200cc, street and some dirt... my stock 428 on my Lifan has been fine. when im riding 2up and grabbing handfulls of 1rst gear, then i worry... how much is a cheap 428 chain? like $10? a tank of gas?

I mean a decent 428, not stock. Would a good 428 chain be ok? Or would it stretch alot too?

well i have a whole 35$ at most into my conversion. most my parts were from old (70-80's) bikes.front sprocket(if countershaft) trx200, find it on ebay. rear sprocket, local cycle salvage, chain off a suszuki i had. my gearing is 13 front 34 rear my takoff is done for. but i get around 70-73 mph, my rpms are way down, heck i cant even here the engine cause i aint screamin wfo just to keep up with traffic. im using a 30+ year old chain and i am over 250lb so it is stretchin alittle bit(my 428 stretched alot) i think im goin to get alittle more top speed when i get a new rear tire. i think a 520 chian and sprockets offer better gearin options. each gear takes alittle longer but its fine with me. gas mileage has improved i think. as for the side cover mod that is on one of these sticky post my side cover broke off so it still fit just fine in the space allowed. before i got my 13t front i was running an 11 front with the still same 34 rear and i even then noticed that i still had good take off and decent top speed(65) now 15f/34r(70-72) and stock 15f/50r(60-63) so..... for 35 bucks and about an hour combine to do everything i think it was worth it

13t front sprocket-16$ with shipping off ebay(trx200)
11t front sprocket -5$ from local cycle salvage yard
34t rear sprocket- 5$ from local cycle salvage yard
520 unkown link chain-free(well the bike cost me 50$) from my back yard
misc stuff- around 10$

Chain stretch and sprocket wear come from a number of factors; chain quality, bike weight, rider weight, riding surface. Then you can add gear ratio and riding style; hard on the throttle, downshifting as a brake, etc, or not.

My bikes see no roads, except in the course of an enduro race, and are ridden hard. I want them bulletproof. One less thing to go wrong and ruin a ride/race.

For me the 520 was a no-brainer. When I installed the Lifan motor, I already had the 520 chain and 520 rear, all I had to do was get a front sprocket {aftermarket, for a CRF230}.

One of the quickest ways to stretch your chain is to have it too tight.

I switched out my stock chain, for a premium 428 chain before ever riding my bike......still havent had to adjust it yet.......about 500 miles.

In most cases, I believe a premium [428] chain is all these bikes need.

I have the stock sprockets.....17/46

128 with 17/45 428 setup on Viva, adjusted all the way forward, original chain & front sprocket. (Dang, doesn't that sound like I know what I'm talking about?)

I have checked at three different bike shops to order a 17 tooth/428/front sprocket. I have the list of bikes that match mine. No one can order anything bigger than a 15 tooth, which I have. My wife does not like sending credit card info over the net, so I won't do it. Getting a little frustrated  I don't know what I'm doing wrong, it should be easy. I think they are trying to order a 520 size and saying 15 is as big as they come.

If anyone is doing a 520 conversion, and they don't need their 17tooth JTF259 front sprocket, PLEASE PM ME :( Name your price, and I'll pay postage too.

I posted this on the "where do I get a 17 tooth sprocket" thread from STcrazy as well.

I would be willing to trade an original soapstone sculpture for a sprocket, if you like art? Cash works too.

I have one! It's yours if you want it! PM me your address and I'll try to get it sent tomorrow. I offered it to someone but never heard back from them. It might have been STcrazy>

Note for those looking at the 520 conversion, the 163FML2 motor will take a 15 tooth front sprocket, but you will have to do some grinding...

Use a 14 tooth or less!

Wow. Great. WooHoo.
:D
Now if I can only get fatboy250 to send me a set of his cool street tires i'd be set. Well that and the chain, rear sprocket, street front fender, vintage gas tank, (at least mine is metal) Handle bars, one person cruiser seat, and old style chrome bubble light. I hope my motor lasts long enough for me to get all the parts together and strap them on :D

Can't thank-you enough SamM, really I can't. :o

You can pick up some nifty stuff for your Chi-custom on Ebay.

Look up a store called vintage-cosmo, I know they have the seat you are looking for, tanks, and lots of other cool goodies.

Yes, I stare, I drool, I plan. But, as I said before, my wife doesn't like sending credit card info over the net. I have to go brick and mortor and pay through the nose, or send cash through the mail and hope for the best. Guess I could go money order? Toronto has one really good cycle salvage on the other side of the city. If I had the cash to make the trip worth while, I'd get the wife to drive the car. I'd need the trunk space to hold all the parts. :D vintage-cosmo eh? well I'm gonna go drool now. N2r

Dont like to send CC info over the net?

Does she have a problem with CC info over the phone?

Vintage-cosmo is Cosmopolitan Motors, a long time cycle shop and importer of those funky Italian bikes way back.

I'm sure they have a phone number!

That's a good idea ob1. International parts are way cheaper, even with shipping. Half the price new than we can get up here at a cycle salvage used. Thanks

Ha I'm such a Luddite. All I get from Vintage-cosmo on E-bay is cosmo cat. It's ok, I know what I want and know I can't afford it yet. Not a chopper or cruiser, more like a cropper :D .
