View Full Version : CDI Wiring/Stator issue

I noticed that my stator was grounded and on the wiring diagram there is no direct wire to ground. I believe this is what is causing my ignition/running problem. Plus there are only five wires to/from my CDI and there is no white/green wire to the CDI from the stator only the black/red and the white/blue. Can someone send me a pic of their CDI wiring or help me out here? I can't figure out which lead goes to what on the CDI to diagnose if it is improperly wired. I have been having problems with the ignition and I believe the guy I bought it from dumped it and tried to rewire it himself and now it is all f-ed up. Please help!

Ok, figured out the CDI wiring diagram, wasn't that hard. Still grounded stator is bad right? Plus I believe my ignition coil is bad too. It won't spark when the plug and cap are attatched and the spark it does give off is weak. I can hold it without pissing myself.

Not sure what You have going on, But they have listings of owners manuals.Heres the link hope it helps with the wiring.

If memory serves, black/red and blue/white are the CDI wires. You may have a bad ignition coil, possibly a bad resistor in the plug cap, a lesser chance of having a bad CDI or an extremely small chance of having a bad flywheel.

Find another coil, most any will do, and see if it sparks strong. If so, get the proper one to fit your bike and you should be set.

When it comes to diagnosing cycle ignition electrical, generally there are no ways to test the components, just replacement. I have had components pass a resistance test perfectly and still be bad.

Here are the resistance measurements for the XR200 ignition coil, yours should be similar.

Primary coil {wire to the CDI and ground} 0.1 - 0.3 ohms
Secondary {spark plug wire and ground} 6.4K - 11K ohms
Secondary {plug cap removed} 2.7K - 4.5K ohms

I do not know if the chinabikes have a resistor in the plug cap, if it does, bypass it with a healthy conductor for testing.

Hey Red, thanks, but I'm no guru! My first posts here were looking for motor wiring info. With diagrams from the CR guys, my knowledge and some luck, I got it going!

:D You're very welcome! You deserve it. I just had to replace the CDI on my kids 110 china bike. Apparently I got a little close with the garden hose and fried it. Bike would start right up and idle halfway decent, give it gas and...pop, pop, pop, gag, puke, quit. I cleaned the carb, changed the plug, swapped coils, yadda, yadda, yadda......nothing. I finally replaced the CDI with one off eBay for $7.00...........BINGO, runs like a champ. I probably needed to clean the carb, replace the plug, etc anyway. Been spending too much time on his Dad's China Bike :D .

Yo Red, pack that cdi connector with dielectric grease!

I think the wiring diagram is not that accurate, some wires are different colors at different ends (according to the diagram)

Yo Red, pack that cdi connector with dielectric grease!

Yeah, it was greased on the connector side, but the back side of the wires had opened up enough to let in water. I regreased the new one and taped the wires up solid. The cdi mounts under the rear fender right above the rear wheel with NO cover or anything. I gotta find a better location and/or a better way to cover it up.

Yo Red, pack that cdi connector with dielectric grease!

I did this on all my connectors, cause Dad had a minor ignition issue early on due to corrosion. This is probably a good prep thread suggestion.

I'm new to this. Where do I find the CDI? I own a 2005 LF150GY. It misses and has an uneven idle. I assume at 400 mi. it is now broken-in. I went through fuel issues and come up with electrics as the possible culprit. I just don't know ignition parts, location and stuff.

I wouldn't rule out carb issues. Have you dropped the needle clip and turned the fuel screw out to 2 turns? If not, start there before you look for electronics. You could also put in a new spark plug if you are still running the stocker.

I put pics in my gallery of the electric stuff with arrows. Could someone take a look and give us a newb tutorial. Sure hope this hasn't already been done, took all afternoon to up load pics

Side = Voltage Regulator/Rectifier

Under Tank = Ignition Coil

Under Seat = 1} CDI
2} Turn Signal Flasher (?)
3} Starter Solenoid

Thanks Ob1. I doctored the pics, added their proper names and re-posted. Very clear now. I wasn't far off, but I like knowing for sure. Hopefully others will be learning along with me. Karma owes you one REALLY good ride. :D I think you might be right with the turn signal flasher. (Mind boggling good call8O )I'm gonna try to trace the wires back but they are bundled in a trunk line. It's my birthday tomorrow so hopefully there will be more riding than wrenching. Thanks again.

No problem, man! When you've been playing with bikes for forever, IDing the parts is no big deal, and I dont even have a chinabike {just 2 china motors}

Not that I know everything, you guys help me as much as I help you, with parts leads and such.

And YOU N2R...scanning your pix is a lesson in adaptive re-engineering!

A lot of times I have to work with what I've got...like right now...adapting a collection of miscellaneous parts and steel to a greymarket Mitsubishi tractor to make the worlds smallest bush hog {26 inches}. My club has moved its enduro event to a fresh new property, got some work to do!

By the way, Suthun ChinaBikers, keep MLK Day 2008 weekend open, if you want to ride the enduro, or the Dual Sport . Rare opportunity to ride somewhere 1st. {Note: Enduro would be best run with cut down bars, no turn signals, etc. DS is fine for stockers.} More info later in the year...

Unless a rod goes through the case and my leg, I'm gonna learn. And ride. And fix my bike into the ground. I rode with a HD guy for about a 1/2 hour today, he couldn't stop looking at my bike and smiling. I'm sure he had an old honda when he was a kid, it was written all over his face. When I told him what I payed, he asked where I got it, he probably had a kid. If I come up to another rider, I'll hang back a bit out of HD respect, but a lot of riders are coming up and talking to me. I don't know of another 150cc bike of any kind on the streets of Toronto, just scooters. I'm a novelty. :D

I was sure that by now I'd be saying "I want a 250cc what ever make japanese bike." I don't. But, if I had an extra 500$, I would spend it pretty quick on my bike.

I thought people were joking about fuel efficency, before and after the carb/muffler/airfilter mod. I should have kept better records, but I'm sure I'm not getting the milage I used to. :( I don't know about the quarter mile, but I beat most cars in the 100-yard dash. 8O

Good luck with the Bush Hog. I'm using the gallery space to keep a picture history of my bike. Birth to death of a bike.

Jason

What is dielectric grease, how much, where do I get it, How do I pack it? Shorts and T-shirts or long pants, suitcase or pack sack? :P

Is it non-conductive grease, water and rust protection. Pic is worth a 1000 words.

Any auto parts store will have it. It is meant to protect against corrosion. Comes in small tubes usually.

Kinda pricey...but good to put on all your battery terminals if you have any problems with corrosion.

Little tube of the stuff was at Ace Hardware for $3.50

Haven't put it on yet though.

Do you tape it up after so you don't get goop on everything? Is it an off road thing, or a good suggestion for streeters too? I don't mind loosing a bolt now and then but I don't want electrical problems, even more when they are preventable. :D

Good idea for everyone. If you ride in all weather conditions it will help keep moisture out of the connections. Off-road in mud and water too. Simple as taking electrical plug apart and putting the grease in the plugging connector back together.

Link to some examples.

Hey Folks,A friend, who has been a mechanic for over forty years, uses VASOLINE, right out of the jar, on all electrical connections, including battery terminals!!!! He says that, primarily,it is the same as DIELECTRIC GREASE, only GREATLY less expensive!!! I have used both, and honestly cannot see any difference, except in price!!! SINCERELY, RICK SAVIDGE.
