View Full Version : Who is interested in a Hawk OEM Tach Speedo cluster?

After about 2 weeks of back and forth with a manufacturer in China it looks like i will have a prototype replacement cluster with a tach to test shortly. This will have a wired sending unit from the wheel VS the speedo cable. I have another thread going on this but figured i would start a new one for interested parties. If the prototype works properly i will place an order for multiple units. I need an idea on how much interest their is for these. It looks as if they will come in at about $50-$60 shipped depending on the # i order. Post in this thread if your interested and i will fully review when i get the prototype in hand.

Hell if its accurate MPH wise count me in. What will all be compatible with it? (Fuel gauge, gear indicator, etc)

that looks beautiful and yea i'm with mq will the fuel gague, speedo, and gear indicator work.

Likely NOT a gear indicator as that would take work inside the trans case but the neutral light will be there as well as high beam, turns, fuel gauge and trip odometer.

I would definitely buy one of these, please add me to your list! :)

the gear indicators don't use anything but the measured speed and rpm to estimate your gear (that is the programming bit, it needs to know the gear ratios essentially) combined with the neutral switch to know when its in neutral. nothing internal to the transmission.

Hmmm, I'll have to ask about that then........

there are aftermarket ones that use hall effect switches and a magnet on the shift lever to sense when you shift up or down. but that is so universal that I doubt this one uses that system. more likely it uses the calculation method using speed and tach.

I'd buy one if they work like butter for the Hawk

Gear indicator is found in most stock vertical chonda engine.
Most "变速鼓" https://huabmp.taobao.com/search.htm?viewType=grid&keyword=%B1%E4%CB%D9%B9%C4 had that Brass tab / Some model lacks "档显" (the wiring) https://huabmp.taobao.com/search.htm?viewType=grid&keyword=%B5%B5%CF%D4 ONLY

Are you saying that a peace for the gear indicator needs to be installed? I'm not quite understanding you....

1. "Brass tab" in shift drum
2. position s/w "下" (low) 档显 | Had many style , different holes...
3. wiring "上"(up) 档显 to display unit...
Most vertical chonda had [1&2] from factory...
Since i don't see it in person...i don't know Hawk lacks ALL, 2&3 OR 3 ...

if that's what the indicator is set up for then we can expect to leave it off.

I'm not really concerned about it. it would be nice but much less important to me than a tachometer.

one of the advantages of switching to an electronic speed sensor is that even if its not adjustable we can install a speedo healer like spud and adjust it for different tire sizes.

this is how a universal gear indicator can be done using only electronic inputs with no gear switch

so if im at red light in 3rd gear with the clutch pulled in its going to say im in 1st or neutral because of the speed? id rather do without it

no, it would show the last gear measured. neutral is only indicated by the neutral switch, and to show first the rpm and speed need to match what its been programmed to see for that.

there is a wire that gets connected to turn on its learning mode.

but if this one is designed to match the Honda style gearbox switch then its a different animal and would be useless for us.

I don't really care either way - the tach and digital speedo is what I want.

What I beleive Humanbeing is saying is that you just need to buy the gear position sensor, and maybe the brass pointer which rotates with the shift drum.
I can't find it for the CG-clone engines, though.

I only have hands-on experience with the horizontal cylinder Honda clone engines, where the pit bikes don't use a gear indicator, but the crate engines come wit one, so you either leave it unconnected or buy a blanking plug to replace it.
A spare gear indicator costs $5 delivered form Aliexpress.com in China.

Just watched some of your Videos. Really liked them and thought they would help me decide to get a Hawk 250. So far im really impressed with this Chinese Motorcycle. Seen that yours runs really well. Did it run that good straight out of the box after you put it togather.

Got to looking at mine today and found the green plug out of the engine by the front sprocket. The engine side of the harness has 6 wires, The OEM hawk harness side has 1 so it looks as if all gears will register with just some minor wiring!!

looking forward to seeing how this goes. would go a long way to fixing the cheap look of the bikes and making them look like higher end bikes. not to mention I hate not having a tachometer with a manual transmission.
