I think they are more common if you have floorboards... I think it is really just a different pedal, as when I have used a bike with them I just ignore the heel half and use the front for up and down... Not sure if it would be any help... I've found them to be a nusiance, but I'm not used to them... Though I think you really need floor boards to appreciate them...

Same gear patter but not rotary

My Yamoto 150GY has an all down N12345, and up 54321N gear pattern. It is not rotary though and will not recycle through the gearings. I thought it would be wierd but not difficult to get used to at all.

Since posting this thread when I first got my bike, I've had the thrill of booking along in fifth gear, about to let out the clutch and see I'm in first on the gear indicator. I did not let out the clutch. The shift felt odd so I looked. Other than the one time, I've had no problem.

I have pics of the bike. I've tried to inbed them (alt/p) and stuff but I don't know how to get them to you. Can you explain how to imbed a pic?
I had a Honda S-90 that was imported from Japan ( almost unheard of then) in the late 60's with the rotary shift described above. Used the brakes to panic stop. Then, one more down to neutral ... Cool...

Yep, There is a bit of a clunk if you shift when you're moving, but you never have to search for neutral again.

This pattern has been around longer than the 1 down we have all grown accustomed to. It is fairly hard to go from 5th to 1st at speed. I think you would have to double clutch it and stand on the shifter to accomplish it. Just take it easy and get the feel for it. It is in my small minded opinion "no big deal" I can switch back and forth almost effortlessly as the trans has a way of "reminding you of what it likes"

Actually mule this post is kinda old, I'm more used to it now. (almost a month)
JeffJHudson re-started the thread.

Actually no, I was in 5th, meant to go to 4th but shifted down twice, I was in 1st. But I just kept squeezing clutch, didn't let go. The clunk was my only clue of Danger Danger Will Robinson! It's pretty smooth to go from 5th to neutral, one down.
