Problem with 1st gear.

Hi guys,

I was wondering if someone can diagnose a few problems:

Sometimes I have problem with getting into first gear from stop. I have to rev a little then step again for it to go in. Extra foot power needed to click into other gears.

Higher idle speed and slow and smooth throttle are required to prevent stall. Bigger pilot jet doesn't seem to help. I started with 20, 30 and stopped at 37. Spark plug?

I'd be looking at clutch adjustment. Also, I find that synthetic four stroke motorcycle oil helps with stubborn shifting.

It sounds like a passage might be blocked, specifically the orifice that the pilot jet controls. For clarity, I've always heard the air / fuel screw referred to as the pilot jet and the smaller jet in the bowl is the slow jet. If you tried moving all the way to a 37 slow jet with no change, it sounds like the fuel isn't getting through.

A new NGK never hurts.

Weld,

Thanks. I'm using Rotella, but I'll go to Walmart and get the motorcycle synthetic after 2,000 miles. You're right, I'm going to adjust the clutch cable a little.

Thank you for the correction on the slow jet and not the pilot.

I switched out the Mikuni carb so I'm back to the original one that came with the bike. The engine still sounds like it requires advanced timing. Actually, what's the right way to check idle timing on this bike? I've been relying on my ears so far.

I've never tried it, but I'm guessing that a timing light pointed in the flywheel timing hole would do it. It should strobe each time the plug sparks, and you'll be able to see which corresponding mark on the flywheel lights up. You could also connect a low speed tach to tune the idle.
