Palouse Falls

Yesterday after church I took Linda in the convertible out to lunch in the foothills of the Blue Mountains in a little town called Dayton.

After that we headed off into the desert for a short hike at Palouse Falls. We drove alone the Snake River for part of the ride. It was 100 degrees at points and the car gets hot in the sunshine so we enjoyed a dip in the Snake as well.

The Palouse River. This country looks like it's right out of a John Wayne western.

The Falls.

The mist coming off the falls was picked up by the breeze and created a wonderful cooling effect. It was hot and dry.

Another canyon leading towards the Snake River Canyon.

We came across this beautifully restored antique (1958) Dodge and Airstream trailer. Owned by a Christian couple we enjoyed talking to.

Thanks for posting the beautiful photographs, Doc. I have been to Dayton, but I never made it over to the Palouse Falls. The restored Dodge is absolutely beautiful, and so is the Airstream trailer.

You're very blessed to live in such a beautiful place (but you already knew that). I'd love an old Airstream like that.

I work 4 jobs, 6 days a week! The rest of the time I study. I have not had much free time, although I will be taking some vacations this summer :-)

Most of what I post is very close to home and just day trips ;-)

Interesting fact:

The World Record for paddling a kayak off a waterfall was done here.

I honestly don't know what motivated that guy, but it's a bigger drop than Niagra Falls!

Whoa!

The Star Wars-style music was a perfect, haunting fit.

Mrs. Weldangrind appreciated your pics, BTW.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I think that was a stupid stunt. I believe it's sinful to needless risk your life. Also, there are fates worse than death. If he ended up paralyzed he would certainly regret that decision. If he ended up a brain-dead vegetable, how would his mother feel?

Careful, Brother Spud, that's a slippery slope.

I know many people who would consider motocross riding, mountain climbing, flying a private plane, white water rafting, hiking the Appalacian train, running a marathon, or being a Navy Seal a 'stupid stunt'. ;-)

There is more to life than safety.

Also, wisdom, IMHO, comes from risk management, not avoidance.

The trip over the Falls, while obviously nothing a guy like me could do, may not be as dangerous as it seems.

Exactly how he could have assesed the danger in advance, however, I don't know.

I'm interested enough to send him an email though IF I ever have the time :-)

He's going to sail around the world next.

Interesting kid, I wonder where he gets the money!

EDIT: He appears in movies, doing stunt's with his kayak. I suspect this is his source of income. He has been invited to kayak in many countries, and has been featured in kayak magazines around the world.

He had a close call in a fijiord in Norway, and a spinal compression fracture in Oregon. Other than that he seems unharmed :-)

On motorcycles over the decades I have suffered a broken right leg (fibula, not so bad), 6 broken fingers (that hurt), and a broken shoulder (mountain bicycle).

A quote from Sports Illustrated:

"Bradt said he wanted to attempt the plunge not to set a record but to show what humans are capable of achieving.
The motivating factor for all this was just that I thought it was possible. I wanted to do it, I guess, because I can.
'It was a calculated risk, no doubt dangerous but also one of the most amazing days of my life.

'It’s a personal thing and nothing exterior, especially negativity, affects that.'
Bradt has faced criticism that his stunt will encourage others to try the extreme sport of kayak free-falling.
But he dismissed the suggestions, saying: 'I hope it encourages people not to run huge waterfalls but to understand that the only limits that exist are the ones you create, no matter what you are doing.' "

He's free to do whatever he wants, but I still think he's nuts. How would you feel about the matter is you were his father, Doc?
