LED Turn Signal Problem

Hooked up the lights on the Bird today. Turned on the key, no headlight, no tail turn signals come on but don't flash now all four blinkers come on solid. I do have a brake light.

Would a weak battery do this? Any ideas?

Don't expect the headlight to come on without a running motor. Some are designed to illuminate the headlight with just the key, but it's not common on China bikes. The rest could certainly be a low battery.

Fired up the bike and the head and tail lights work perfect!

Now the turn signals still aren't working. I guess I need a diode of some sort for resistance now that I'm running LEDs?

You won't have a problem if you are using two, LED turn signals. However, if you have four, LED turn signals, you need to do two things.

1) Get an LED flasher unit
2) Remove the turn signal indicator bulb, or install a diode kit in front of the indicator bulb.

I am heading out for the evening. However, if you have further questions, I will answer them later.

Awesome! I can get the flasher at work. Do you have any info on the diode kit? I want to weigh my options before I just yank the bulb.

Right now, your indicator bulb is connected to both positive terminals of the right and left signals. To correct it for LED's, you'd need to make a diode bridge.

Solder a diode into each wire that currently leads to the indicator bulb. Connect both wires to the positive terminal of the indicator bulb, and connect the negative terminal of the indicator bulb to ground.

You can either buy diodes at an electronic shop, or harvest them from a dead circuit board, like I did.

If you replace all four, incandescent, turn signal bulbs with LED bulbs, you will need to get an electronic, or LED flasher relay. If you change only the front, or only the rear bulbs, you might be able to keep the stock flasher relay.

If you have a single bulb for your turn signal indicator, the bulb uses each side of the turn signal system as a ground for the other side. Therefore, if you are using four, LED turn signals, you must remove the turn signal indicator bulb for the LED turn signals to work. If you wish to retain the turn signal indicator bulb, you can install the Kuryakyn Diode Kit.

http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/719/Diode-Kit

You can also buy this diode kit from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC.

http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/...%20diode%20kit

If you wish, you can also make your own diode kit. Merely solder diodes into both the orange and sky blue wires leading to the indicator bulb, and connect another wire to ground, as shown in the following diagram.

When I performed this modification on my Zong, I used 1N4004 diodes I purchased from Radio Shack.

You can purchase a 2-pack of these diodes for $1.19, or you can buy a 25-pack of mixed diodes for $2.99.

If you have an LED flasher relay installed, your LED turn signals will work as soon as you remove the turn signal indicator bulb. Removing the indicator bulb breaks the bleed over circuit to the turn signals on the opposite side. Therefore, removing the turn signal indicator bulb will allow you to use your LED turn signals. However, your turn signal indicator will not work with LED turn signals unless you solder the diodes into the wires as I described.

If you only use two, LED turn signals, you won't need to change anything.

Does you bike have a single, turn signal, indicator bulb, or does it have two indicator bulbs, one for each direction?

Mine has one indicator bulb. Lol I think I'm going to diode up now because I'm gonna do the entire trailtech vapor dash and add on indicator system.

It's pretty simple. If you don't know anything about it, take your bike and the diagram spud posted to radio shack.
