OIL FYI

I know oil has been talked about a lot here but I just wanted to let you know about my experience. I’ve been running Rotella 15w40 now since I got my 07 Lifan GY5 with good results. After 4000km I decided to try a synthetic. I tried a quart of the Walmart full synth 10w30 after reading another member had good results with it. The first thing I noticed is the clutch slipped a little under heavy load until the motor got nice and hot, which is not good. It slipped even after a clutch adjustment. Other than that it seemed the motor ran a little smoother especially at take-off/low rpm’s. This could just be due the thinner weight or the fact it’s a slipperier synthetic oil. Either way I dumped the synth right away and filled her back up with Rotella and the clutch slip was gone. I think I will be sticking with regular dino oil from now on just to be safe.

Yeah, that was me. My Roketa clutch slipped since day one in 4th and 5th when the oil was cold. I have noticed no better or worse clutch action with the 10w30 synthetic or any of the other types I tried. I plan to upgrade to HD clutch springs over the winter while I have the bike apart to go through it. Bummer it didn't work out for you since, as you mention, the lighter oil really wakes up these little motors. My next oil change I am gonna try a 5w20 just to see if it continues to climb in power. In my Roketa the difference between a 20w50 and the 10w30 feels like twice the HP, no joke.

Perpahs its the Wal-Mart brand oil that is the problem. I've been running Amsoil synth motorcycle oil with no slippage at all.

Maybe the Lifans don't like the Wallyworld oil. It's what I am running, but like I said, the Roketa has always slipped. Slipped just as bad with $12.00 per quart Royal Purple as it does with the $2.00 per quart Walmart Synthetic.

China bikes should LOVE WalMart (ChinaMart) since most everything in WalMart is from china.

I've read that synthetic is better but not to use it until an engine is fully broken in.

It (synthetic) has worked well in my tracker since the first oil change at 3000 miles and has been in it ever since.

I doubt I'll run it in our bikes I'll just be sticking to the crude old dino oil which in my opinion better suites our bikes.

My Roketa clutch would slip at times too, didn't matter if I was using dino oil, or Amsoil. A clutch spring kit took care of that. Simple & cheap upgrade.

synthetic vs coventional oil

I used to read every popular motorcycle magazine out there avidly. cycle world, motorcyclist, and cycle, and there was a article in thier on oil, and they tended to want to steer away from synthetic oil designed for automobiles, something about automobiles having no wet clutch system, and the oil being to slippery. Now synthetic oil designed for a motorcycle was fine it had the right properties to obtain good friction.

Im not saying automotive synthetic oil is bad, it is good but may not have anti slip properties for a wet sump friction type clutch in a motorcycle.

This is what the article said not me.

Good luck

Yeah those old "synthetic no-no" articles have pretty well been debunked and shown they were intended primarily to get you to buy $12.00 per quart motorcycle specific oils.

What kit did you find that fit? I am looking as we speak for one. I am pretty sure a kit for the 80 - 84 Honda XR200R bikes is a drop in replacement. A Barnett HD spring kit is like $25.00. Cheap investment.

I broke down and bought the synth, moble 1 I think, for motorcycles only. 13$ a litre stuff. Most expensive in Canadian tire. 5 more than normal full synth as a gift for making it back from Quebec. I'll never put anything else in any bike I ever own. Clutch stopped slipping as much. Rods are quieter. I wish I forked out more earlier. JMHO
