Are you saying that a peace for the gear indicator needs to be installed? I'm not quite understanding you....

1. "Brass tab" in shift drum
2. position s/w "下" (low) 档显 | Had many style , different holes...
3. wiring "上"(up) 档显 to display unit...
Most vertical chonda had [1&2] from factory...
Since i don't see it in person...i don't know Hawk lacks ALL, 2&3 OR 3 ...

If most of the features work when you test it I'll take one too.

if that's what the indicator is set up for then we can expect to leave it off.

I'm not really concerned about it. it would be nice but much less important to me than a tachometer.

one of the advantages of switching to an electronic speed sensor is that even if its not adjustable we can install a speedo healer like spud and adjust it for different tire sizes.

this is how a universal gear indicator can be done using only electronic inputs with no gear switch

no, it would show the last gear measured. neutral is only indicated by the neutral switch, and to show first the rpm and speed need to match what its been programmed to see for that.

there is a wire that gets connected to turn on its learning mode.

but if this one is designed to match the Honda style gearbox switch then its a different animal and would be useless for us.

I don't really care either way - the tach and digital speedo is what I want.

What I beleive Humanbeing is saying is that you just need to buy the gear position sensor, and maybe the brass pointer which rotates with the shift drum.
I can't find it for the CG-clone engines, though.

I only have hands-on experience with the horizontal cylinder Honda clone engines, where the pit bikes don't use a gear indicator, but the crate engines come wit one, so you either leave it unconnected or buy a blanking plug to replace it.
A spare gear indicator costs $5 delivered form Aliexpress.com in China.

Just watched some of your Videos. Really liked them and thought they would help me decide to get a Hawk 250. So far im really impressed with this Chinese Motorcycle. Seen that yours runs really well. Did it run that good straight out of the box after you put it togather.
