Hawk on highway/tire question
Hey y'all I am looking at useing a hawk with some performance mods for commuting. The catch being I have two 70mph stretches one is no longer than say 5min, how ever at the moment the other is a construction site so I can say for sure how long 70 would have to be held. Can the hawk cruise at 70 well enough after some work to get me there in one piece, reliably? Also has anyone tried touring bike tires on the hawk?

Bone stock both of mine would hit 50 but it was a struggle. I've went to a 17T front sprocket, rejetted the stock carb, modified the airbox (thanks MotoCheez), and just gutted the cat and made a larger muffler insert. Can cruise all day at 50 and can get to 55 now. If I changed the rear sprocket to something like a 46T or 45T I think 60 is possible. While I think 70 could be possible I don't think it's very probable or practical. I think the problem with getting a Hawk to be able to achieve that speed you would have to gear it to the point you wouldn't have enough torque to pull a greased string out of a cat's behind. Just for reference I'm 6' and bounce around 245-250lbs. Obviously if you're lighter the Hawk will be a little faster.

going 70 MPH on a hawk....even if you could get it there would be like going 110-120 in your average car....sure it might do it...but do you really want to.
Cruise at 70, no way!!! Cruise to me means the machine can comfortably do it. So my answer is, absolutely not! |

I like Ariel Red Hunter's answer the best: No. BUT I guess anything is possible with enough research, time, knowledge and $$$ (the latter being the key part). Problem is after all is said and done it would be much easier and cheaper to just purchase a used Jap/Euro dual sport that is capable of the speed you are wanting. The Hawk just isn't designed for that speed.

With a 17t/45t set of sprockets, if the engine had the power (it doesn't), it would do 70. RPMs are plenty low to do more if it could. If I have the wind behind me or am drafting a car doing 65, mine will do 65 with that combo but 62 is the best it will do on a calm day in no traffic.

after you exceed 60mph then wind resistance climbs almost exponentially. I've hit 70 with a tail wind while tucking running a 17/43 sprocket combo on the TT250. it will cruise 63-65 sitting up with that combo.
is there not another route you can take that skips the 70mph zone? and is that a 70mph speed limit? or flow of traffic, because if its a speed limit you will still be getting run over.
