Weldangrind; It's not that I'm a 'glass half full' kind of guy as much as I'm a 'is it time to ride the motorcycle again?' kind of guy. One of my riding buddies in Carrollton is more of a Goldilocks kind of rider. It can't be too hot, it can't be too cold, it has to be just right. I ride year round, in all kinds of weather, just couldn't imagine it any other way. A famous north pole explorer once said "There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing." I say that all the time when people ask me why I'm on a motorcycle in the middle of winter.

Jerry; I wish I could say that "I" was patiently waiting my VIN tag experience. We're just finishing up with the work here in NC, and I'm probably going to set a land-speed record on the drive home so I can get the Hawk cleaned up, get the tag applied, and get it loaded onto the hitch carrier so I can take it to the sheriff's office for inspection first thing tomorrow morning. I don't think the sheriff's office is going to be an issue, I think the problems will continue to be centered around the DMV and title office. I need to go to the Department of Driver Services as well and get my driver's license renewed, too. I'll snag a couple of pictures of the tag and how it looks on the bike, and let everyone know how it works out at the DMV.

I noticed something this past weekend when I had my tank off the bike. There are two hole already drilled in the stem where the tag should go. Also check your clutch cable to make sure it is not getting smashed by the wheel stop on the stem. Mine was beat to hell. So I rerouted the cable and now the clutch works so much smoother. I put a heat shrink tube over the damaged part to seal it back off. Have a safe trip back and good luck with the DMV.

Good catch on the clutch cable, Jerry. I noticed that the holes for the rosette rivets are on my bike, too. I'll have a look at my clutch cable routing when I take the tank off and put the new exhaust on it. I'll probably double check the valves, too. I set mine to 0.005, but I think I may tighten them up a little bit. Haven't quite made up my mind on that.

My clutch cable was snaked all different directions. May be my fault when I install the handle bars. I have my valves set a .002 on exhaust and intake.

In GA if you are stopped by LEO and have South Dakota plates with GA drivers licence they will start asking questions...

I made it back to the house at about midnight this morning. First thing I did after I kissed the wife and pet the dogs (not necessarily in that order) was to check on the VIN tags I had printed up. I'm a little less than impressed, they kind of look like they were made as part of a 3rd grade art project. The text is ok, but the finish on the labels isn't good at all. If I were to put that on the bike, the cops would laugh me out of the parking lot.

So after a few minutes with a razor blade and a machinist's rule, I think I have them cleaned up acceptably.

It looks pretty good on the bike, too.

I'm going to get the cargo carrier hooked up and take the bike over to the sheriff's department after breakfast. I'll post a little later this morning once I have that clown rodeo under control.

Nice job. Certainly no worse that what would have come from the factory.

If this all works out you could always have it duplicated with a stainless steel tag here. http://www.machineplatesonline.com/v...d-hull-plates/

Hmmmm! He's not back. This could be 1 of 2 things. Either he got it tag and registered and is out riding or He will be on the 5 o'clock news. "DMV worker strangled by wild man on Hawk" Come on man! the suspense is killing me.

The wait is over!!!

I would like to begin by thanking all the users on the forum for sharing their ideas and encouragement as I attempted to register my Hawk 250 in Georgia. I will sum up the events of today thusly: "Guess who's got two thumbs and a Georgia tag... THIS GUY!" I went to the sheriff's office this morning and got the VIN tag verified, by a stroke of luck and perhaps a foretelling of things to come, the receptionist at the sheriff's office is also a notary. I asked very politely if she would mind notarizing the documents I had brought, and she took care of it for me. I quick ride over to the DMV, and they looked over all the paperwork, and were very accommodating there, as well. There was a small screw-up when the lady was entering the info from the MCO, but that was easily remedied, and I walked out with a tag, registration, and a $134 lighter wallet. I'm calling this one at 80% successful so far, with the final 20% being the title arriving in the mail. They had to send everything off to the state to be reviewed, and they will issue a title following that. The possibility remains that when they review the documents, the game is up and they revoke my tag, but it's out of my hands for now. So to recap the process up to now; 1st, purchase a Hawk from the online supplier of your choice (in light of my ordeal, I would recommend that you try to find one that will have the correct MCO phrases to avoid this in the first place). 2nd, if necessary order a VIN tag from Chuck at www.motorcycle-manufacturer-license.org/VIN-number-labels.htm (this step might be problematic for those people out there who hold the 'right/legal/lawful/proper/etc.' way to do this in higher regard than I do. Also, be prepared to do some finishing work on the tags. As anyone who has made it this far in my posts has seen. 3rd, get the required forms from the DMV and take them and the bike up to your local sheriff's office or police department. 4th, off you go to the tag office to get the paperwork processed and a new tag. That's about all there is to report on the process, hopefully some other enthusiasts out there find this helpful.

On to Jerry's point from earlier today: Guilty as charged... Yes, I got the tag, and couldn't help myself. I've been out riding for the better part of the day, and even went so far as to put the exhaust on. That's the last piece I had to do for "The Great Hawk Outfitting." The bike runs amazingly well, and I've got a touch under 200 miles on the clock now. To the potential fallout if things had gone the other way: I was ready to fight like I was the third monkey on the ramp to Noah's Ark, and Brother, it's starting to rain! I would have absolutely been a household name if things had gone Tango-Uniform! I'll sit back and enjoy some beer and pizza as I wait for everyone's responses to roll in. After that, I think there's no better way to celebrate than a night ride...

I'm glad that worked out. Was watch the news just in case. I just got back from a short ride before the rain and cold front got here. That's not going to stop me from riding tomorrow. Just put more clothing on. Enjoy the ride .
