Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant?

Has anyone tried adding Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant to his fuel? Here is the link to a description of the product at the Lucas website.

https://lucasoil.com/products/fuel-t...fuel-treatment

Walmart sells it for $3.83 in the smallest bottle (5.25 ounces).

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lucas-Oil...ingMethod=p13n

Walmart also sells the quart bottle for $8.87. This seems to be the best value.

Thank you for posting this Spud!

Gerry at CSC highly recommends this product during break-in periods on all of their motorcycles. I bought a pretty large bottle for that reason and have been adding it to every fill-up in all of my motorcycles.

2LZ,

What is your assessment of this product after using it? I am tempted to give it a try, myself.

If you are doing this for lubrication and cleaning properties, the old timers in the Goldwing world (and myself and many others) use Marvel Mystery Oil or Stabil Marine (has lubricating properties and better protection against condensation) and swear by it. 2 ounces per 5 gallons of MM0 is all it takes to keep the 4 very finicky and intricate Keihin carbs working perfectly and prevents their teeny tiny internal passages from getting clogged up (a common issue on GL1000-1200's). A 32oz bottle of MMO is around 4 bucks, and lasts for 16 fill ups - or 80 gallons - on my Goldwing.

I recently switched to Stabil Marine 360. It's a little more expensive than MMO, but it has made a huge difference on any post 1+ week storage startups (back to those teeny passages of the GL carbs). It also helps with ethanol blend fuels as well, and only takes one ounce per 10 gal.

I put in a shot glass full every tank...when I remember...

It feels oily to the touch, so I feel it may be more of a lubricant than a cleaner, but that is speculation.

I don't think there is any way to prove if any of the additives are beneficial as far as engine wear, without tearing down the engine, taking measurements, and then comparing to engines that have not had the additives.

You're welcome to tear down my engine to check.....

JB & 2LZ,

Do you guys notice any difference in fuel mileage and/or engine performance when you forget to use the Lucas product?

I bought that additive just because it was recommended by CSC during the break in process. I put in a tiny amount when I was shutting the bike down for the day. The next day the engine kept stalling, about 3 times within the first minute of starting the engine. On the 3rd try I gave it a little throttle and that seemed to stop the stalling while idling. It stalls no matter if the engine is cold or warm. Usually after sitting for a few hours. There have been a few times when I've been coasting at low RPM's when suddenly the engine cuts out.

I didn't start adding the fuel treatment until about mile 180 or 2 visits to the gas station. Recently, at around mile 275, I added a larger amount of the same treatment to a full tank of gas and noticed that It's not stalling as often. Maybe the fuel additive that was added initially by CSC was getting too diluted and not as effective after subsequent fill-ups?

Thanks for you feedback, Rob.

My RX3 has been running well for over 25,000 miles without the Lucas fuel treatment, but I might still experiment with it. It certainly wouldn't hurt to run the Lucas fuel treatment to clean out my fuel injector, et cetera.

I haven't noticed any difference in mileage or performance.

I keep track of every tankful of fuel. Mileage depends more on the use of the throttle and the terrain.

As much drama as I have had with the engine, it starts with the first push of the starter button, never stalls, and has the same power/performance as it did when new...

....in fact, it seems to be running better....except for the strange noises.

It Doesn't Seem To Hurt

I've used this stuff since day one. I did my first valve adjustment at 500 miles and the next at 4400, when the bike started to stall while coasting down from highway speed with the clutch pulled in. Only the exhaust valves needed adjustment, there was no reduction in the intake valve clearances. I can't say for sure that the Lucas is responsible, but I can't say that it isn't either. I usually put in a squirt with each one or two gallon fill up, I couldn't tell you the exact amount.

I bought a quart initially and now refill that bottle from a gallon jug that I picked up at Walmart for $30. I've still got 3/4 of that left and I'm at 5800 miles now.

Always use it

Spud, I've been using the Lucas upper cylinder cleaner/lube since day 1. I've never put in fuel without adding it. I keep a 4oz squeeze bottle in my kit which has 1/4oz marks on it so I can put in a 1/4oz per gallon. So I can't comment on whether my fuel mileage is better or the bike runs better since it has only run with it. What I can say it my bike runs well but I'm only at 6500 miles so I think it too early to say really anything about it's benefits. To me it's cheap insurance. Since it's more of a lube than a cleaner...according to a bunch of things I read on the net...so it must be true, I used the Lucas cleaner at mile 4000 and plan to do it every 4000 miles or so for a tankful.

Said this already somewhere on this forum...

Lucas fuel treatment contains "PIB" aka Polyisobutylene... PIB helps with fuel tension, water removal, and fuel droplet sizes (want to be the same size)... it is one of the many "fuel system treatments" that I have tested and I found that Lucas Fuel Treatment and Upper Cylinder Lube "works as advertised"... takes a while (a few thousand miles) to clean up existing (carbon) deposits, but overall it's an "OK" product, buy it on sale or with a coupon code (Advance Auto) and make sure you use it every fill up for best results

1 to 1.5 ounces for every 5 gallons of fuel... first doze I always used 1.5 ounces per 5 gallons... then 1 ounce every 5 gallons after that

MMO is about half the price of Lucas but couldn't say which is better.
I think both are valuable if for no other reason for lubing the fuel pump.

I see Walmart is selling Marvel Mystery Oil for $3.88/quart.
