WTF Quick hawk/magician starter question

Beeing the genius I am I rode home from the store yesterday on the magician with my starter button pressed in i have the saftey bypassed (I know, I know...) so it was cranking the whole trip. Now my starter works sometimes and just seizes others but it makes a terrible screeching noise either way.when the bike is running it sounds and performs great Normally I'd just be looking for a starter to buy however I can use the Kickstarter just fine tho it makes the same screeching noise. Do you think replacing the starter is the fix or could it be something else?

Yeah, I would say the starter is hosed. They tend to overheat when under power for extended periods of time. The only way to know for sure would be to remove the reduction gears that tie it to the flywheel and spin it. If you get bad noises, tadaaa.

Look at the gears behind the cover
Your starter would only be on with clutch pulled or in neutral
Not if in gear n clutch out
Best rear it apart n remove the wee cover n maybe stator cover see what’s gone funky

Pulled the reduction gear thing out and cranked on the starter it still makes the noise but I got it to work reliably enough for now. So the problem is in the starter motor itself. Any idea where I could find a replacement starter motor that would t cost $90?

All over ebay for 35- 40 bucks. You just need to match up the tooth count of the starter as they do vary a little between 9 and 11 teeth usually. Most likely it is the same specs as the Hawk starter, which I have saved in my resource guide.

Total length: 6"
Diameter: 2.7"
Mounting holes (center to center hole): 2"
Output gear: 11 spline
