THe one thing it doesn't really say is how far forward should the adjustment make the engine case lever? Just to the point of resistance met or further or some slack at the arm?

No slack at the engine case, it will be under slight tension when adjusted properly. The lever there is taking up some spring tension inside, so there should be no free play there. The only free play should be in the lever on the handlebar.

ok that helps, thank you I'll check this again this afternoon. Engine cold or hot?
