Quieter than Stock Muffler for Hawk 250 - Repack?

Hello Gentlemen and Ladies!

I was wondering if anyone has found a way to make the Hawk 250 stock exhaust not so loud. It is perfectly quiet at idle and below 1/8 throttle, but it is scare the neighbors loud over 1/8 throttle. My ears ring and hurt after a 10 minute ride at 35mph. I know ear plugs fix that for me, but it takes 5 minutes before every ride to get them to seat, and they do nothing to help my scarred neighbors.

I pulled the exhaust end cap to see if it had a spark arrestor, and maybe it has a poor one, but, I did not see any packing whatsoever in the silencer. Has anyone ever packed the stock silencer and did it reduce noise?

Anyone have success with an alternative silencer that works better?

If you think the stock muffler is loud, don't ever get an aftermarket upgrade, ha,ha. The stock one on my Hawk is not bad if you do not get on it, when you do it will squawk some as it has the CAT removed. Is the metal baffle (silencer) still in the exhaust you have, the tube that has the holes drilled in it?

The Stock Hawk exhaust is the farthest thing from loud you can get. The aftermarket systems put it to shame. Honestly, in the short time I rode my first Hawk with the stock system, I always thought it was loud until I let a buddy ride it, and then I realized it seems louder to the rider than it is to the people around it.

Way louder than stock so not what you're looking for, but I found to be a nice compromise between the stock and open aftermarket was to remove the spark arrestor from the stock muffler and grind the edge down until it fit in the rear of the aftermarket.

I'd omit the plastic cone, because mine melted after a short ride.

I'm right with you on this... I want a much quieter experience. I'm interested in what you ended up doing. I have been looking at getting a different baffle and packing to see how that does. I'm not looking for the dirtbike brap at all, I want to be as silent as I can as I play on the trails.

If you get too quiet, then the valve train will seem louder, but with that being said, maybe someone who has changed to aftermarket on their Brozz, and will make arrangements to send you the muffler from it. They are very quiet stock.

Im not sure what a stock hawk 250 muffler is like.

but if you want to try and take the edge of the loudness...

you try something like a 'lollipop baffle' which are pretty easy to DIY.

The Hawk muffler is a chambered baffle muffler like a standard car muffler. It doesn't really have packing. Think Thrush Turbo Muffler.

The exit is also quite small with a spark arrestor.

As I said before, these bikes are not actually that loud out of the exhaust. Have somebody ride it away from you and you will understand.

Ya stock muffler is back on,put after market exhaust just to loud. Put stock back on after cat removed,a little louder not too bad.

I would hate to see you neighbors if a lawnmower backfired. They must be scared of anything louder than a mouse fart. LOL. It took me longer to get used to wind noise, than exhaust noise. I have had 3 of these bikes , A Brozz, TBR7, and Hawk. The Brozz when stock was extremely quite, and the TBR7 , and Hawk both were louder with stock exhaust, but still not even close to "disturbing the peace" loud. I can say from experience that your bike would probably be very quiet,if you did replace the stock Hawk muffler with one from a Brozz, but it would come at the cost of being more restricted. I operated on my Brozz exhaust, and I gained more from working the muffler than removing the catalytic converter. I got my old phone and am posting these pictures of the restriction that I removed from the Brozz exhaust. The muffler had the long,small diameter (probably no more than 5/8") pipe running all the way up into the muffler. I removed it, and enlarged the exit of the muffler, and it was loud, like an aftermarket. I ended up making a lolipop baffle as suggested. I know it's a lot of pictures, but I figured that it may be something that someone may want to do . If I had another Brozz, I would I would definitely work on the exhaust, rather than replace it. I did eventually weld a short nipple angled downward to the end of the muffler, but I probably shouldn't have went so large on the exit.

Yeah, mu Vulcan S was the same way. Hell I think a sewing Machine makes more noise. lol Of course i's no long that quiet with the new exhaust.

My Mother had a Cordoba when I was in Highschool, and it had the 400 4 barrel, which was pretty peppy for a mid 70s car, but it was really quiet. When I would rev it my friends would make fun of me, and say it sounded like a black snake in the road hissing.

Well, I picked up some muffler mat and wrapped the baffle. With cell phone DB monitor app, take the results with a grain of salt, I was at 82ish DB before and 79 after. That's monitoring a cold start with the phone at the same spot about 1m behind the bike.

What I want is to find a replacement muffler that quiets down the exhaust note to that of my buddy's V-Strom 650. That bike is nearly silent at the exhaust. Yes, I'm aware that's not a fair comparison but that's the direction I'm looking to go. I have ZERO desire for brap nor added performance.

If anyone has suggestions toward that goal, I'm all ears. Posts about "it's not even that loud" really don't move this tread foward.
