I'm betting the stator is the problem, Allen.

Stator are $25. I need to find my puller so that I can confirm which one it has.

The stator charges and puts out volts to the CDI, but it my have a dead spot for the pickup coil. I don't know, but I am acumulating parts.

At least you are accumilating inexpensive parts.

These electrical gremlins can be tough to chase down.

Serial parts replacement is not the 'cleanest' way to make a diagnosis, but sometimes that's what it comes down to.

Nurse, can you pass me the new spleen? Something's wrong in the abdomen and I need to see if this fixes it...

Cheap parts is a good thing.

I wouldn't want to do this with a honda.

I swapped another coil again. Got spark. 8O

This time I unthreaded the HT lead and put it on the known good coil. Road again for awhile. Start and stop a few times. Seems good.

Read the voltage on the pickup. 0.4-5vac. Seems like I get more volts with it running.

Quit again. Haven't checked for coil output yet.

It's a lot easier when the "thumb repair" works, Allen. Good luck; we're rooting for you!

Okay. I put my test sparkplug in and still had spark. Pulled the plug from the scooter and it was wet looking. Weak spark. NGK plug.

Went and dug in my parts bin and found another plug. Checked with used plug and had good looking spark. Installed that plug and it runs again.

Also I put new carb on, but I think that the vacuum petcock doe not work.

It was leaking gas out of the carb again.

Defective plugs do occur. I think sometimes they get dropped in installation or shipping or storage and the insulator gets damaged.

In aviation there is an expression:

'Drop a plug once, drop it twice. The second drop is in the garbage.'

At $20+/plug that would hurt!

Glad the scoot is good. With that said I'd ride it close to home for 20 miles or so just to be sure...

I picked up two new plugs last night going to put one in today and then ride it. Yesterday I got about halfway to the farmer's market. Fortunately it was downhill back to the house.

Check very carefully to see if there is a wire or connector grounding out the coil (or one of the other components) intermittantly.

I was having a similar problem once with an old tractor, turned out that a wire was grounding out where it went to the distributor [I know...] only discovered that by accident- by accidentally moving that wire while I was testing......

Usually these intermittent probs are something small and simple like that...and they are the hardest to diagnose!

So the new spark plug fixed the problem?
