Where is my VIN?

I would like to register my Flywing MX 150cc in the state of Alabama. I cannot, however, find the VIN on this thing. I have looked all over, all I can find is the serial # and date plate riveted onto the steering head. (The serial # also matches the serial number etched into the engine case). Is there a chance it would be UNDER that plate? Ive tried running the serial number (which is 8 digits) but all websites reject it. Ive even tried putting eight 0's before it; no dice.

Also, what documents would I need to apply for or 'get' to register? I bought the bike for next to nothing out of the newspaper and have no paperwork at all.

You probably need to obtain paperwork for it. You might have to get a bonded title and go from there. Using Arizona as an example, there are private offices (as opposed to the state motor vehicle dept) that deal in bonded titles. Essentially, getting a bonded title ensures the state that no one else will claim to own the vehicle. Once you get the bond, then you will have paperwork to submit to the state. In AZ, these private offices oftentime offer state MVD services as well, for a fee, to save you from having to spend 85 hours, and a paid day off from work, from sitting at the MVD. However, not sure about your state, and even in the state of AZ might, they might want to see the bike in person at the 'real' MVD office. But, start with a bonded title place and go from there, or better yet, inquire with your MVD before starting the paper-trail!!

I know this is an old post but I thought I should chime in on it anyway.

My tag is located about mid-bike , still on the frame, but not in the usual place on the steering-T.
My VIN number is etched in there and if I was to move the DOT plate ( or the FMVSS plate) it would indeed cover the VIN.
I found out that the US is the only country that requires the DOT/FMVSS plate be placed there.
A lot of the China manfufacturers ship to many other places than the US so they don't move it.
There are holes where it should go, but not the plate isn't mounted there.

Just a ...FYI

Thanks for that detail. In Canada, we have the same VIN requirements as the US.
