Lucky, lucky, lucky

Funny how things are connected. There is this post with a question from Get_Out_and_Push that I posted an answer to with a comment about the extra oil screen that Suzuki based bikes (Qingqi/Qlink/Konker, ect.) have;

http://www.chinariders.com/modules.p...wtopic&t=14446

Low and behold I notice a small puddle of oil under the very place I discribed. I found that my drain plug was leaking. At my last oil change, I found that the gasket had somehow got pulled into the threads and was torn with some of it getting into the motor. The screen stopped any of it getting any further, though. I found another bolt that was slightly larger and installed it. It tighted ok and I didn't see any oil come out after re-starting the bike and checking the oil level. I guess with all the hot weather lately that the oil thinned out and caused the leak. Anyway. I went to Advanced Auto and they had just what I needed in the drain plug display. It says "Double Oversized" on the front of the package. On the back it says "Do not use unless pan threads are stripped". Looking at the bolt it has a tappered end that looks (and is!) like a tap. It looks like this;

I went with the 1/2"-20 size (item number 65206) as it was slightly larger than the one that I put in. I took the plate off on the bike (three bolts), aligned the plug, and tightened 'er down. It worked like a charm....until the gasket broke. It's plastic. Luckily I have my handy-dandy copper washer set from Harbor Freight. I threaded it in with out the gasket, took it back out and blew the shavings away with my air gun and then tighted it up with the gasket on. After bolting the plate back on and filling with new oil (the old was pretty dark after only a few months), there are no leaks. By the way, the gasket that got caught was plastic also. I think I will change out any plastic gaskets I see in the future to copper on any of my vehicles just to be sure.

Thanks for the tip, David.

Is this the copper washer set you purchased from Harbor Freight?

That's cool! I'm gonna grab that next time I'm in HF.

Yep, that's the one. I used the set when I replaced some brake lines on another bike, also. I think it's the 3/8" size that fit most banjo bolts.
