Question Gy200

I posted this on mychinamoto.com and they told me to come here so this is exactly what I posted there.
Hi all, I'm new to the forum here and I was looking to see if anyone could help solve this problem. A few months ago I went to go start my Supermoto GY200, but the battery was dead so I hooked up the battery charger to it and decided to try and start it that way. The bike would crank and crank but wouldn't run for only a couple seconds while using starting fluid(switch is on at this point), then all if a sudden the key wouldn't work in the ignition and the bike wants crank on its own without the key being in(switch is off at this point). It bothers me that I can't figure out the problem, but any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

BTW I did buy a spark plug for it today, I will put it in tomorrow when I get the chance... The reason the bike's side panels are off and the seat isn't secure is because I was trying to figure out what was wrong and so I could get to the battery.


In the photo below, with the gauges, the dial I have circled should display what gear it's in when the key is turned to the "ON" position but it doesn't display it when I turn it to the "On" position. I should mention that all the electronics worked when I went to originally get it going (stated in my first post), but like 30 minutes into trying to get it started the electronics went funky, meaning that the bike wanted to start on it's own without the key.I figured this picture might make it easier to understand what I am talking about.

In the photo below, the throttle side, the kill switch I have circled is in the off position, and the bike seems to want to start without a key in the ignition and while this switch is in the off position. I figured this picture might make it easier to understand what I am talking about.

In the photo below is a sticker that is on the frame stating the mfr. if you wanted to know that or not.

I hope these images were what you were looking for and I hope they help solve the issue.

Welcome; we are glad you joined us.

It sounds as if you have an electrical short circuit somewhere. I suggest you examine the entire wiring harness and look for frayed wires, et cetera.

Welcome!

Regarding the goofy ignition switch, I suspect that the green wire has broken. Have a good look at it and the associted wires as well.

The poor running could be from dirt in the slow jet. Have you dismantled the carb for cleaning?

I recommend that you stay away from starting fluid with this bike.

Okay, I will have a look at it tomorrow and as for the carb, no I did not take apart the carb yet.

Also, make sure the battery is fully charged. A weak one will hang the starter. Also check the two screws underneath the ignition switch. I've found they come loose and cause all kinds of fun.

as far as cranking with the kill switch off, thats normal... all the kill switch does is kill the spark. it will still allow all other functions such as lights, horn, starter etc... however ift hese things still work with the keyed switch off, you may either have a short between the switch, or a bad switch itself.

and as others have said, the poor running sounds like clogged jets in the carb

Well I got the new spark plug put in over the weekend and today I some how managed to get the electrical stuff to work fine, but the bike still won't start. I was thinking about getting a new carb, but not sure yet, so I was looking at how I would take the carb out and it doesnt seem very easy. The first picture below shows the left side of the bike, but it doesnt seem like I can get the carb out very easily from that side.

The picture below show the right side of the bike where the carb doesn't look like it's going to come out very easy either. I have also circled a screw that when I loosened fuel came out the bottom hose and drained... this fuel was stinky, but when I turned the fuel on nothing else came out. Now I'm not sure if anymore was supposed to come out of there when I turned the fuel on or not so I figured I would post it.

In the picture I have circled the back of the carb because I have noticed that the air box doesnt connect to the carb and I can't pull it together to connect them so I'm not sure if this is a bad thing or not.

that looks just like my Panterra. I removed the bottom manifold to head bolt first, then the top one. I then had to twist the carb/manifold out slightly and then unbolt the manifold from the carb. it wouldn't come out together. good luck it''s a fiddly job.

The screw circled is to drain the float bowl of carb if you screw it out and turn gas on gas should come out if it doesn't then you've got a block somewhere. Yes it is very bad that the boot isn't on carb its letting dirt and everything else get picked up in motor. Spray some starting fluid in carb with choke off and full throttle if it starts its carb related if it doesn't then its something with ignition system. Also take spark plug out and ground it to the motor and try cranking it with kill switch in run position if you see blue spark its good if not its ignition. Good luck

Yeah when I screw it out with the gas on nothing comes out. As for the boot that goes on the carb... the air box and carb must not me mounted prooperly because the boot from the air box is too short to reach the carb. I did spray some starting fluid into the bike with the choke off and it runs for like 2 seconds before sputtering out. I just put in the spark plug, but I forgot to check for the spark. Thanks for the advice/tips.

Ill put money on the carb can either try cleaning it out, rebuild it or as I'm gonna do and get a mikuni 30mm as there cheap and jets are plentiful if you do intake or exhaust

Whatever you do, don't ride your motorcycle with the air box boot separated from the carburetor. Riding the bike in it's current condition will allow unfiltered, dirty air to enter the carburetor, and the engine. When you encounter dirty air, the dirt will enter the engine where it will eventually ruin the intake valve, piston rings, and cylinder.

If the air box boot has shrunken with age, you need to get a replacement before you can ride the motorcycle. You can test the engine, and allow the engine to run stationary with the air box boot in its current condition, as long as you are careful not to let a lot of dirt enter the engine. However, you can't control these conditions while riding the motorcycle.

With that air filter I can just take off the air box and put that on the carb?
