Deck Work

A month or so back, our friend Weldandgrind asked how "The Humble 2LZ Abode" was coming along and I'd mentioned that this Spring, we'd been working on replacing an old, rotted deck instead of working on the property. He asked that when I get some time, to post some pics of the project, so here you go.

The house was pretty rough when we first bought it. Years of neglect on the redwood and cedar. It had been empty for quite some time but we felt it had a lot of potential. I knew the deck between the house and garage was on it's last leg and this Spring, it finally collapsed. Time for replacement.

The first pic is when we bought the place so you can see what we were dealing with. I ended up "chainsaw demo'ing" the old deck and also found some more rot under the corner of the walkway around the house, so that had to come out too. Nothing can be simple, right? (yes, that's me at the end of a long day enjoying a cold beer)

After the deck between the house and garage were done, I added a second deck behind the garage, plus we built all the railings and bench work....add a few "western" decorations and VIOLA! Done.

I guess I can only upload so many pics, so I'll post again with more pics.

Here's the remaining pics all completed. Believe it or not was one of the hardest parts was making that dang "sleeping cowboy" leaning against the corner!

Very nice job! Looks great!

I just got done building a 12x12 ground-level, floating deck at my rental property. Those deck blocks are great.

Yes they are!...under the right circumstances. The deck between the house and garage is attached and suspended so I had to go the traditional method with footers and pier blocks....but for the one behind the garage, it was a no-brainer. Floating deck was the way to go. It's amazing how solid it turns out!

The stain on that new deck is so nice! Excellent work.

Levelling those deck blocks must've been a pain.

Thanks for the pics!

I had some cancer removed early august ,and needed something to do a few weeks later so my son and I took on my sister in laws deck and back yard make over .Its almost finished now ,just the upper rails to install when they come in ,hook up the gas fireplaces and the tv should be here this week as well .Its very hard to take pictures of it ,it is 50 x50 on the main level ,the upper deck is 50x24 and the swim spa is 12x20 .These pictures are from mid September ,24' lengths of trex are all special order so we spent a lot of time waiting on materials we were shorted rom our original order .I will try to get up to date pictures this week .enjoy !
I guess I should add that in the end she didn't want the stairs as it blocked the view ,so that area is now another BBQ and bar set up .I guess I can only add one picture so I will make a few posts .

Wow!

What are you filling the cinder blocks with? What is trex? Is that all composite decking material?

Awesome work!...and you gotta love Trex! Always straight, always the same size and length. I really thought of using it but with the cedar and redwood house, I stuck with redwood.

Weld, Trex is a composite material that is really nice to work with and is basically trouble free, though they do make maintenance sealant for it, if you so choose. It's great to work with because it's all cloned material, unlike natural wood, but it's pretty pricey too.

Thanks for the clarification. I've seen composite decking at local yards, but I've never taken note of brand names.

Cedar is very economical where I live, so I gravitate towards it.

.The trex is very expensive ($80.00 per 24' ) and you get nickel and dimed to death with the special hardware to install it , our local Home Depot and Lowes ,only stock it up to 16' lengths but we wanted to not have any extra joints so we ordered in everything which caused lots of delays as they short shipped ius 24 boards .You can heat it and bend curves in it ,but they didn't want that on this deck .Its really good around pools and docks because there are no splinters in your bare feet .
The cinder blocks were filled by the masons with cement when they finished the stone work .
