Exclamation Hawk Battery Selection [info]

I tried searching here for battery dimensions and info but the info I could find was incomplete and not compiled so here it is.

Current Hawk Battery:
L: 140mm
W: 70mm
H: 100mm
V: 12
A: 6.5 (unsure of this, but battery marking says 12N6.5)

Hawk Battery Box:
L: 135mm
W: Can be fudged with appropriately sized bungee cord and hog rings (or a square knot)
H: 115mm

Here's the list I used to determine what batteries are readily available in the USA and their dimensions. Based off of this list and measurement info, here are a few selections that are the closest to the stock hawk battery listed with specs as so (LxWxH in. (LxWxH mm), V, AH, CCA, Wet Cell/AGM):
  • ADX5L-BS (4.5x2.75x4.25 (114.3x70x108), 12, 4, 80, AGM)
  • ADZ7S (4.5x2.75x4.25 (114.3x70x108), 12, 6, 130, AGM)
  • AD7C-A (5x3.5x4.5 (127x89x114), 12, 7, 80, Wet Cell)
EDIT:
Megadan suggests the: NOTE: Megadan "only suggest(s) the lithium battery when combined with an upgraded reg/rec, or at least checking your voltage output before hand. Lithium batteries don't like undercharge or overcharge very much, so the charge voltage is happiest when higher than 13.4, but below 14.3, but each manufacturer has it's own range within that spectrum."

Personally, I'll be going for the ADZ7S as it offers high CCA in a AGM battery at a relatively similar price point. If there's a loose fit issue I may buy some adhesive backed foam sheet and stick it to the battery to secure it from jostling in the box.


It should be noted:
  • All dimensions for the battery were measured at the widest points on the battery (see pictures)
  • The calipers were calibrated ~2 years ago
  • I have rounded to the nearest 5mm as I believe this would be how the manufacturers would measure them
  • Hawk battery measurements taken from a 2017 Hawk
  • Proceed at your own risk as I am not a battery expert, just a mechanical engineer going off of what I can find on the web, the ability to measure accurately, and my understanding of design intent. If anyone understands batteries better or I said something incorrect, please leave a comment and I'll edit the original post.

If you are feeling spendy, then for a lithium option there is;

Battery Tender BTL14A240C: 240cca rated. 14ah. Case Dimensions: 5.27 inch (134 millimeter) length x 2.55 inch (65 millimeter) width x 3.62 inch (92 millimeter) height; Weight: 1.76 pounds.

I just put this in my Hawk, and it fits perfectly with one of the included foam blocks on one side of the holder. I managed to get it on sale for 80 bucks, but they usually run over 100, so like I said, spendy,

On the plus side, my bike has never turned over stronger lol.

I am going to add a link to this thread on my Resource guide. The battery question seems to come up a lot. Good post!

If anybody else ran with a different style battery from any listed here, post it up. It would be nice to get it all in one place.

Sweet! The foam block would guarantee that your battery doesn't wear in the odd spot too!

I'll report back to this thread when the ADZ7S arrives with pics.

As you can see on my current battery pics, I had to cut the battery out of the hawk due to corrosion and the fact that it wouldn't hold any charge. I should have just cut the wires and crimped new terminals but was hoping to not have to do any crimping (because I'm lazy). Now I have a battery with extra boogered terminals and wires that need a new crimp connector...

walmart carries that 7s battery too. as far as lithium batteries if you have starting issues dont run the starter for long periods the lithiums do not like it for some reason.

A part of my lithium battery change over involved upgrading the ground wire. I went to the extreme and put on a 6ga. ground strap.

The only change I really had to make to run it was to put a new smaller ring terminal on the smaller ground wire crimped to the terminal with the main ground strap terminal at the battery.

Word of the wise, be careful with the bolt that secure the main ground to the engine case. Mine was corroded at the threads going into the case, so there is a chance it can be stuck. I ended up replacing the bolt with a stainless steel unit and putting some anti-seize on the threads. I also sprayed the heck out of my connection points with anti-corrosion spray.

Did the ADZ7S work for you? Did you need to modify anything to fit?

I have used YTZ7S-BS (4.45 x2.7 6x 4.13 (113x70x105) and is swimming in the battery mount. I'd like to use a YB7C-A but the width of 3.56" is a concern.

Per OP states: "W: Can be fudged with appropriately sized bungee cord and hog rings (or a square knot)" No it can't. There is a limit due to the side cover. Without making a mockup battery I estimate the side cover can handle a battery 3.0" Wide. (Edit See Below)

I really dig the YB7C-A w/ Dimensions LxWxH 5.13 x 3.56 x 4.5 inches. That 3.56" sounds iffy.

Per the OP the original battery is 70mm. Which is 2.75". Of course the battery can hang out further because the rubber strap stretches. How far past 2.75" can you go? 3.56" (88.9mm) and not interfere with cover? Some 12N6.5-3A and -3B have vent tubes in different locations. In all cases there is a plastic fitting that hangs out past the the side of battery.

I am estimating side cover will allow up to 3" or 76.2mm may be a tad more Kind of hard to measure. I could cut a piece of foam or wood out and put it in there.

Personally I want a REAL motorcycle battery YB7C-A which is Dimensions LxWxH - 5.13 x 3.56 x 4.5 inches. The 4.5" (115mm) will just make Height clearance. The Length if fine, with room to spare.

The down side of the YB7C-A even if it fits it cost about $65-$85. The YTZ7S-BS is very small and requires pads or fillers, is about $26-$30. I have been through 2 of them. They don't last.

HAS ANYONE GOT A YB7C-A LxWxH - 5.13 x 3.56 x 4.5 TO FIT?

EDIT : I fabricated a wood/cardboard battery with the above dimensions and it seems to fit. The mockup battery is a tight fit. The fwd top corner just touches side cover. Vertically, net fit. Top aft corner of airbox has a mounting flange that overhangs, which limits the vertical clearance to 4.5". So it FILLS the battery area. Terminal lugs on the Hawk are 6mm, as is the 6mm screw / bolt on the YB7C-A battery. The batteries on eBay come with ACID, vent tube and nuts and bolts. [U]NOTE Amazon many batteries are shipped with NO ACID. So avoid unless you have battery acid laying around. Last there is a vent tube on back and plastic fitting not included in overall width dimension. The air box has a recess for this tube..

Bottom line it should work. Again. Use info at your own risk. I found prices best on EBAY free shipping for about $37. With tax it will be about $40 for me. The alternative which I have used before YTZ7S-BS goes for about $26 free shipping, Approx $30 with tax. The down side it is physically You would think a battery that is physically larger would have more juice? But the smaller YTZ7S-BS claims much higher CCA, and is SLA.

ORIGNIAL HAWK BATTERY is a 12N6.5-3A Size 140*67*100mm (5.5"L x 2.63"W x 3.94"H ) weight 1.5KG (3.3lbs) 75 pr 90 to 110 CCA and 6.5Ah. The 12N6.5-3A and YB7C-A both have vent tubes, not SLA. The vent tube on back may hit airbox if not aligned with recess. They do make them with vent on ends which my be better.

Apropos of nothing, I haven't seriously considered putting a Li battery in my Dong Feng, but I did splurge on one for my Kawasaki Z650. I have to say, the way those things spin a motor is darned impressive. It almost feels like the whole bike surges when I fire it off, and I have never felt that even with brand new batteries of other types.
