Things I Learned In Edmonton
Spent from midnight Monday to 3pm Friday bouncing between Edmonton and Wainwright, AB for work.
I found that AB 14 between the two is a pleasant, albeit, long drive when done back and forth everyday. Working with UPS Canada, the company, is a mind numbing pain in the ass. Working with the local UPS Canada people was amazing. Working with Canadian National management when I’m in Edmonton is surprisingly easy. Why are the same such pinheads when I’m in the states? 110kph is ‘meh’, though I’d be impressed if the Ural could do it. Klicks vs Miles. I’ll take miles. To myself, “Hey, that twenty klicks went fast. Oh, wait, that was only twelve miles.” I prefer 2.99 a gallon gas. First thought as I looked out my hotel window Tuesday morning was “Omaha?” A lot of good Mexican food can be found. McDonalds is McDonalds is McDonalds, no matter where you are. 31C is hot. Everyone I dealt with on a one on one basis was super friendly. CBC Radio is pretty good. Classic rock stations are Classic rock stations, though I heard more BNL than I hear down here. Customs both ways was a breeze but was told the next I come across to work, to bring better documentation. I have ‘Global Entry’ for coming back into the US, so that’s quicker than stopping at an ATM. I hope CN needs my help again in the future.

Whoa, you were in the neighborhood. I'm about a half hour out of Edmonton! And yes, gas prices here really do suck don't they?
Glad to hear your trip went well! (Well, except the UPS part!) Last edited by MICRider; 07-22-2018 at 07:31 PM. |

Glad to hear you survived "Deadmonton" and damn you got within an hour from me when you were in Wainwright!

Had I not been majorly pissed at the ineptitude and arrogance of UPS, I might have been able to plan some visits. I have pretty much dubbed this ‘The Work Trip From Hell’ because of them. I could go into details but suffice it to say, UPS management got some very vocal complaints from both CN and MTM.
Quite the storm Thursday night, wasn’t it?

I left Wainwright about 8:30 and hit the storm just past Viking. Until then, though, it was a really good light show. Things let up about the time I hit AB 21.

Edmonton is where I was born and raised. I'd say I grew up there, but I haven't grown up yet.

Adulting isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I mean, yeah, you can have nicer toys, have adult beverages, sit at the grownups table and such, but there’s also responsibilities, politics, mortgages, jobs and taxes.
