Sprocket retaining plate

I recently changed my sprocket from a 17/50 to a 16/39 about 3 days ago and I love it. Get great speed low rpms at the 17/50 the engine was screaming at high speeds. Sounds good now my problem today a started hearing a squeal from front tire. Turns out it was my front sprocket rubbing against the case, the retaining plate teeth had stripped. Luckily I had a spare so it’s fixed now but I’m scared it’s gonna happen again. Does anyone know what would cause this to happen?

I would think you had the wrong fitting sprocket?

Wow you might be right. Now that I think of it I’ve never purchased a 16 tooth and looking over what megadan sent me there wasn’t a 16 tooth sprocket in his sell list of sprockets. I think your right it might of came off my sons bike. Thanks I’ll check it out tomorrow and compare it to my other sprockets. There bikes are smaller than mine and figures they wouldn’t fit but I think you might be right. Thanks

Well the 16 tooth sprocket is the correct size I went ahead and changed it anyways to a new 15 tooth. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again

To my eyes that looks like it wore before it sheared all of the teeth. I would suggest checking that plate every time you service your chain. Maybe it was just a bad plate, but I wonder if there isn't something else at play, like the chain being pulled in one direction causing that plate to wear against the splines of the shaft.
