Head Scratching Brand new tbr7 won’t stay running

I bought 2 new tbr7 and put them together I also bought new clone carbs for them. I put a 110 main jet in both of them and left everything else the same. I then set the air/fuel screw 2 and half turns out. One bike is running good and the other I can’t get to stay on the exhaust gets hot really fast when I can get it to stay on for a few seconds and I can smell strong odor of gas. What could be wrong. Any help is appreciated

Welcome to the forum!

Did you check your valve lash on both bikes?

Afterwards, check and adjust the float levels, as they seem to be as all over the board when they arrive on the clone carbs. Then check and clean out the carbs. The sometimes have machining debris still inside the bowls and passages.

Also inspect your intake boot for tightness and cracks. Theres stories on here about having cracked boots on new bikes.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sounds like it real lean. What size pilot jet are you running. The main jets doesn't control idle. Like TxTaoRider said. Check for air leaks in intake. 2 1/2 turns out on the idle mixture screw would indicate too small of an idle jet as well.

If you come to a standstill,...no progress,....maybe switch the carbs-and-intakes from one to the other? if it still doesn't run good, you've eliminated quite a few items and yes, don't overlook the valve adjustment

Thank You

I will try all these suggestions today and let you know. The only thing I changed in them was the main jet everything else was what came with it I will let you know. Will the muffler not being connected to the manifold good cause it not to run?

To restart it ,does it take choke, or no choke? If it has to have the throttle wide open to restart is is rich. Really lean, or even possibly a blocked exhaust could explain the over heating issue. I guess it could be possible that the inner catalitic converter could have been crushed in manufacturing , and restricting exhaust flow even more than they normally do.

Choke on

I have to have choke on to get it started and if I let off the throttle it will not stay on but seems while it is on the exhaust gets extremely hot.

Stock carb

I forgot to say after I could not get it to run with the clone carb I bought I put the stock one back on it and the bike is doing the same thing. So I don’t know if it’s the carb or not I am taking carbs apart today.

Then it is lean, not getting enough fuel for the air it draws. Definitely check the valves ,and look for intake leaks. I would try the carb off the one that runs well. On cars some people take an open, but unlit propane torch all around the intake, and carb to trace down a vacume leak on a running motor.

Adjust the valves first then proceed with trying to tune the carb. A high idle will also make the engine heat up faster. Idle should be around 1500-1600 rpms. Check for intake leaks or lose or disconnected vacuum lines.

When you adjust the valve be sure to keep the small square headed adjustment screw from turning with the locknut. Re check clearance after tighting the lock nuts.

Do all of the above but first look into the exhaust pipe for any obstruction! I live in the land of mud wasps is why my thought!

Picture

Will this being loose on one side cause it not to run or cause the pipe to get real hot?
