Digital gauge setup issues

I purchased a digital gauge and speed sensor from Amazon.
I wired up but my tach is reading double what my external tach reads. I asked the seller for a way to fix figuring it’s set up for wrong cylinder number.

I connected the blue/white wire for the tach. They are telling me I must have connected to magneto wire. I have no idea which is the magneto wire.

Can anyone help me identify the other colors in this connector?

Yellow
Green
White

Thanks

Thanks, I had seen that post, but my unit isn’t able to change anything other then tire size.

I’m hoping someone knows what the wires are for that are in the connector with the tach wire.

You have the the other digital gauge than I have but they're similar enough. With the setup on mine you can adjust all the parameters for the unit easily enough; I will post a pic of the instructions (didn't yours come with instructions?). The yellow and white wires are the AC voltage and they both go to the rectifier/transformer-which gets turned into DC voltage to the bat. The green is to the ground. The blue/white wire is the correct one that you connected it with-it is the ignition puck (which gives the RPM.) With my gauge you can adjust the # of cylinders by going through the menu. There has to be a way to adjust that. Your best bet if all else fails is to contact the seller and explain that it was set wrong from the beginning...probably for a 2 cylinder-and get a replacement or better instructions. Best of luck with this...it can be aggravating!

This may not apply here, but I will throw it out there just in case. If you are installing this in a two cylinder bike that uses a wasted-spark coil, but the gauge was designed for an engine with individual coils, the tach will read half because the pulse signal is actually half. If this is the case, there may be a tach signal wire on the bike that you can tap either in the ECU or CDI module.

I have reached out to the seller, they don’t seem to know. I even tried to explain the 2 plug as being the issue.

I have tried to get my display to change but it only seems I can change the tire size.

How do you’ll get it to change from tire to other options? Mine reverts back to main display.

Also when I change tire size I don’t get to alter numbers by short press individually. Mine only offer 17,19,21 as the options when I short press.

It’s a hawk 250, so it’s a single plug. I was hoping someone had another idea on setting up.

I’ll hope the Amazon seller sends a good one this time…

T1jeep, if your supplier doesn't correct the bad, non-adjustable speedometer, you can always get the identical unit from Aliexpress for $23 + $5 shipping and have a fully adjustable speedo! This unit is an exact match to yours...:

Does it have longer wiring to get to the area by battery to hookup tach and gear indicators? Pictures I have seen don’t appear the wiring is the extra 3 ft to get there.

Do you just solder on longer wires?

That's a great question! Doesn't your wiring harness (with the 6 pin connector for the gears) terminate up by the headlight. I do remember that on Hawks you do have to run a tach wire to the blue/white-stripe wire, but I thought all the others were in the harness at the handlebars/headlight. Did the speedo you installed have a 2-3 foot harness with it? Never heard of that. If so, it must be specific to Hawks and yes, you would have to run some wires if needed. Maybe someone could pipe-in about where to get the 6-pin connectors to make it right. I didn't think it would be that difficult, my Bashan just plugged right in - no drama. I think Megadan and Jerryhawk installed that speedo on their Hawks...perhaps they'll chime in. Best of luck with your supplier.

I wish, no my harness connector is by battery. I’m thinking that is why this gauge is slightly more….

He’s sending a new gauge so I hope it fixes issue.

I’ll update once I get and verify it works.

Can someone tell me how the tach wire transmits it’s signal?
Meaning can I put a resistor in series and lower the reading on the tach?

My experience with tachs is that they use a digital pulse (essentially, the tach is a pulse counter). A resistor wired in series would only work if the tach was designed to read a linear voltage in the way that fuel senders do. I don’t know everything, but I have never come across a tach that works this way in the past.

Afterthought: Is there any chance the tach might have DIP switches on the back or under an access panel to set the number of cylinders? Seems like there would have to be a way to do this if not through the front panel settings.

I wish it had dip switches. I have taken apart to no avail. I am just trying figure a way to knock reading in half as it should…
