Hawk DLX electrical grimlins

Hello All - need some perspective on this:
Hawk DLX sat for a bit. I ran it, but not enough.
Bought it with a bad cluster, had to do some rewiring with the cluster, but was running before an after this.

Fast forward to now, can't get a spark, no fuel pump sound. Did a volt test at the fuel pump and gettin around 9.5v all the time at the pump socket. Even with the key off.

At this point I am thinking it is a ECU problem? Disconnected the cluster. No change.

Unit will turn the starter like anticipated.

Sitting here frustrated, appreciate the help.

Have you checked the voltage at the battery? If that, too, is 9.5 volts then you may have found half of your issue.

I think finding voltage at the fuel pump when the key is off is also concerning. That indicates a wiring malfunction somewhere, or something being connected backwards. I'd highly doubt (I say, not having access to a wiring diagram for this bike) that the fuel pump is controlled by the ECU. The injector and spark ignition certainly are, but the pump should either be switched by a master relay someplace or directly by the keyswitch.

My recommendation is to make sure you didn't switch any wires around when rewiring your cluster, or get any connectors reversed, etc. I've seen vehicle electrics do odd things when circuits are closed backwards and voltage gets sent in the out, etc. If everything else checks out and it works before you did some work, common sense says that whatever you last changed is most likely related to what's going on.

I don't know where to find a wiring schematic for this bike but there should be a relay somewhere for the fuel pump. It may be stuck in the on position. Fire ants are attracted to relays and they cause various problems.
Constant power would definitely burn
The pump up. But I don't know if that would kill the spark? It could be a failsafe.

Sir, if ever we meet I will buy you a beer.

Found the relay that supplies power to the pump. Only relay on the bike - aside from the turn signal relay. It was all crusty and corroded looking, found a new one at the auto parts store. It is just a cheapo AC/fuel pump relay.

Tracing wires, squinting at colors: turns out this relay also supplies power to the coil. Plugged in the new relay, started right up.

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

At least they actually start and run new out of the box unlike the carb bikes.

They run and ride out of the box ,they are just very lean so they pass emissions, but they do run .

The first line on post #2 is something to think about. Just a thought here!

My carbed bikes ALL ran "out of the box". My rejetting was one and done, optimized to tune them the way I want them (not EPA)... No gremlins to think about. Easy start, fuel/air by my design.
Maybe you can give RFoster950 a hand here. His EFI bike is faultering. Sounds mysterious. But I am not the expert on EFI. I guess they run (lean) until they don't.

Maybe this doesn't happen to most EFI owners, but when it does, you can't just clean the throttle body. Carbs are low maintenance, low anxiety and no wiring at all.

The EFI/carb conversation continues!
