Inside new 2021 TBR7 gas tank

Hi,

Before I put gas in my TBR7 for the first time I thought I would take a look. You might want to take a look too. There is a tube type filter about 3 inches long as part of the fuel petcock on the tank but from the looks of my tank an extra filter to trap rust seems a good idea. It is all in the lower parts of the tank. It goes the length of the tank on both sides. I have more photos, but this will give you an idea.

Thanks
Al

I didn't look before I filled my Hawk, but I bet thats pretty common. Most of the Chinese made equipment I own is powder coated and has rust under the coat.

Same problem. I did a phosphoric acid slosh, followed by Red Kote. (Fuel tank liner.) You can get the phosphoric by the gallon at Home Depot as "Metal Prep." I used it straight, but apparently it can be diluted with water and left in the tank overnight.

I'd prefer a plastic fuel tank, but I've heard they are illegal on the highway. Dunno if that's true.

Who'd you get it from? That's a bunch of s--t, right there. This shouldn't be happening, especially a new bike. I'd be pitching a bitch.

EH, cider vinegar to clear the rust out, rinse, then treat it immediately with WD40 to displace remaining water and prevent flash rust from forming. After that run an ounce or two of Marvel Oil, Marine Stabil, or even a little bit of 2 stroke oil from time to time in the tank and it will keep the untreated metal from rusting. Also has the side benefit of lubricating the moving parts in the carb like the needle and stops them from wearing over time as quickly.

I personally don't like fuel tank coatings. People will argue their anecdotes of how it's been fine or lasted a long time, but I have had to deal with several tanks that this was done to where the coating started to come off. Want to talk about a headache?

Hi,
I am in process with the dealer. They immediately ordered a new tank but after a week they said their supplier returned the order as they did not have the tank in stock. I asked to keep an open order on it and send it to me whenever it becomes available. I will see how that goes and will post with outcome. I will post the dealer at that time.

Maybe it won't pass muster for initial DOT for import or something, but there are tons of dual sport dudes running around the nation's highways with plastic expanded IMS or Acerbis tanks on various bikes. Have been for decades. If they're actually illegal... uh, I'm a scofflaw too.

POR15 Fuel Tank Sealer FAILURE

After eliminating the rust last spring I cleaned/rinsed/dried and sealed with POR15. It looked great at the time so I thought this was a done issue. Well nine months later I look in the tank and see large blisters and pealing of the POR15. Like Dan said this is looking like a real mess.

I do not use any kind of tank sealer, never seen it last. Farmers around here use it,then its starts to come off. A real problem now, time for a new tank.

Purchased from TXPowerSports

Just wanted to answer the question as to where I purchased the TBR7. I bought from TxPowerSports.com. At first they indicated they would send me a new tank but were out of them at the moment. Seemed reasonable given the time and shortages that were common due to COVID. But it became obvious no help would be on the way. I would look elsewhere if I were buying.

POR15 peeling and blistering - POR Response

Hi,

After contacting POR about the blistering and peeling this is their response

A new tank has a very slick surface and requires both our Cleaner Degreaser and Metal Prep to prepare the surface for sealer. Gasoline contains solvents that leave a residue on the surface and poor adhesion. Most use Aircraft stripper.

I rinsed with gas so according to POR that is not adequate, hmmm. The comment about aircraft stripper is in response to my question about removing the POR15
