Zongshen 200GY-2: Left Switchgear Upgrade

The Zong is a great little motorcycle; however, I have never been particularly pleased with the quality of my bike’s left switchgear. Of course, aftermarket switchgear is relatively cheap, so it is neither difficult, nor expensive, to upgrade this component.

Recently I replaced my original left switchgear with a spare, stock unit. At that time I also decided to upgrade the original switchgear. The remote choke lever is incorporated with the switchgear, the mirror base, and the clutch perch on my Zongshen motorcycle. I enjoy the location of the remote choke lever, so I decided to upgrade the electrical switches instead of buying new components.

The horn button is simple, and reliable, so I decided to keep it stock. To upgrade the headlight switch, I chose Radio Shack part #275-407.

To upgrade the turn signal switch, I chose Radio Shack part #275-325.

After removing the switchgear from the clutch perch assembly, I trimmed the housing, installed the new switches, and soldered the connections.

After checking the fit, and clearance of the new switches, I was ready to reinstall the switchgear in the clutch perch assembly.

Here is a photograph of the completed assembly.

My original switchgear worked well for 25,000 miles, so I am not in a hurry to replace my stock switchgear with the improved switches. However, I am glad to know I have replacement switchgear handy if I need it. I am also glad to know I can easily repair my Zong’s left switchgear with locally available, quality switches, for a cost of $5.25.

Wow! That's exactly where the Victory 'enricher/high idle' (fuel injection) lever is! Cool!

looks cool but i would be worried about getting my leg impaled by it or destroying it, if you go over the bars.

I would be more worried about the mirrors, WA. However, the way I ride, I think it is very unlikely I will be going over the handlebars!

Thank you, LZ. I could easily mount the "choke" lever in another spot, but I like it in the present location. With my FMF TC2 silencer installed, my Zong starts easily, and warms up quickly. Therefore, even in the winter, I start riding my bike soon after I start it. When the engine is cold, I enrich the fuel mixture before I pull away from stops, then I easily disengage the "choke" with my left thumb after I am underway.
