Garage Pro Travel Trunks
In case anyone is interested, the large, Garage Pro Travel Trunks are back in stock at J.C. Whitney. :) Previously, J.C. Whitney sold the same travel trunk under the company name.
http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=4753 I have owned several of the J.C. Whitney Travel Trunks, and they are superb. However, the newer, Garage Pro (GP) Travel Trunks are even better. :) The GP trunks are lighter, employ stronger lid straps, and cost less than the original travel trunks. To locate the travel trunk, go to the following link and search for JCW-277022. ;) http://www.jcwhitney.com/?filterid=d17169y2013g67 http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps014fa9a9.jpg If you use a 20% off code, you can get one of these large travel trunks for $40, delivered with free shipping. These trunks lock to the luggage rack on a steel mounting plate, and can be easily removed whenever you wish. You won't beat this deal on eBay, or anywhere else. I currently own an original trunk trunk, and a new GP travel trunk, but I am seriously tempted to buy another. ;) |

Thank you for providing the informative links, Humanbeing. :)

These travel trunks are copies of Givi, E360 travel trunks, which usually cost over $200 apiece. ;)
http://www.hayabusa.org/forum/attach...ech-rack-3.jpg The mounting plate on the new, GP travel trunk is slightly different from the old mounting plate. Apparently, the new GP travel trunks fit perfectly on Givi, Monokey mounting plates, and vice versa. ;) http://burgmanusa.com/forums/17-afte...whitney-s.html |
Sears formerly sold the J.C. Whitney Travel Trunk under their name. You might find the following video informative. It shows an unboxing of the travel trunk, and its subsequent mounting on a Kawasaki KLR650 motorcycle. The video also shows how the Givi Monokey mounts are compatible with the Garage Pro Travel Trunks. :)

I shared this in another section as well.
I have one of the JC Whitney travel trunks, and it's very good. I installed a genuine Givi for Pastor Jim, and I didn't see much difference. |
I had the earlier JC Whitney one on the scooter.
|
These travel trunks are very rugged, and hold a lot of stuff. I gave one of my travel trunks to a friend this summer, so I just placed an order for another, Garage Pro Travel Trunk. ;) You really can't go wrong for a price of $39.99, delivered.
|
I've always been a bit suspect of hanging all the weight off the rear of a bike, especially a trail bike. Just be
|
It's wise to be circumspect. ;) However, I have been using these trunks for years, and thousands of miles, attached to the luggage racks of both my Honda XR650L, and my Zongshen ZS200GY-2. Personally, I haven't had any problems.
http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/q...psaec2b9c0.jpg |
Don't ya'll worry about snapping these things off on big hits let alone broken sub frames?
|
My goodness, no. :hmm:
The subframe of my Zongshen 200GY-2 is very strong. I'm confident the subframe of the Zongshen RX3 is very strong as well. All Chinese luggage racks are also very strong. I installed a very strong luggage rack on my Honda XR650L. :) The subframe of my Honda XR650L is not noted for its strength, so I reinforced it. ;) The Garage Pro Travel Trunk and its mounting plate are very strong. Needless to say, one should still exercise discretion, and not overload a travel trunk. When heavily loading a motorcycle, one should also take care to keep the weight distributed, and as low a possible. ;) http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/q...psf073ded1.jpg |
I agree. The racks I've seen on China bikes are not trivial. My Honda clone bikes have fully welded subframes, like an old XR200, and I've yet to see one crack.
When Son of Weldangrind and I joined Spud on an adventure ride to Bonneville last year, we had mounted a massive Plano box on the rack to hold everything we needed. It worked very well. |
Weld,
I think you will agree; the road to Bonneville got pretty rough in places. ;) I have traveled thousands of miles over similar roads, at high speeds, with a fully loaded, J.C. Whitney Travel Trunk attached. I haven't had any problems. :) As a side note, I can vouch that Chinese motorcycles are built tough, to perform as work vehicles, not recreational toys. That's one of the reasons Chinese bikes are significantly heavier than Japanese motorcycles. ;) Unlike a dirt bike, an adventure bike definitely needs to be built in this manner, with a very strong subframe to support heavy loads. I am thoroughly confident the Zongshen RX3 is built tough, and will prove to be a strong, reliable motorcycle. :) Therefore, I won't hesitate to mount a Garage Pro Travel Trunk on my Zongshen RX3. |
Glad to hear so much confidence in the Zong frames. I'm not a big fan of top boxes or hard luggage and probably won't even install either when i build my RX3. I'm a fan of soft luggage and probably do something like this.
http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdb9f1d84.jpg I like my weight low and forward. |
You make a good point. I like those soft bags.
The Garage Pro Travel Trunk is really nice even if you are just running errands around town, or shopping for groceries. ;) It nice to secure your items in a locked trunk while you are visiting different stores. :) In addition, you can easily remove the trunk, and keep the panniers, if you are going for a day ride. ;) |
I just got an email verification; my Garage Pro Travel Trunk has shipped. :D
|
Ordered the Garage Pro
... but I think I messed up- I got the Medium. Too late to exchange for a Large- Live Chat said the order was already processed and ready to ship about 10 minutes after I placed the order.
Will a Medium fit a helmet? I want it for store runs- put the helmet in the box when I go in, put the groceries in the box when I leave. If I could fit my jacket and the helmet that would be a plus. Anyone have a Medium? How much stuff can you cram in there? |

I like those soft bags. I see they're depicting a fuel bottle in the pocket; I use one of those for gasoline, rather than camping fuel. |

Thanks for the reply, but I think you misunderstood my question. I'm asking if anyone here already has a Medium and how much stuff can they fit in it? |

http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/q...aug2011234.jpg You can fit two bags of groceries in the large travel trunk, and it will hold a lot of gear when you take a multi-day adventure on your bike. http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/q...dXR650L013.jpg |

I received my Medium Travel Trunk and I'm happy to report it does fit my medium size full face Icon Alliance helmet, as well as an ancient Shoei RF200. It doesn't quite fit my Fulmer ADV style helmet- the chin bar is just barely too long.
So anyway, it should be big enough for my purposes. I may get another medium and then a large and build a rack for a hard-bag system. These JC Whitney cases seem plenty rugged. Can't beat them for the money, that's for sure! |
Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear I was mistaken, and the medium travel trunk holds two of your helmets. Indeed, these travel trunks are excellent values. :)
I also received my large travel trunk this morning. :) |
Spud, have you always purchased the large size?

The chinese version seems more honest (42L). |
I must admit, until recently I haven't owned more than one helmet. ;) I can barely fit my Fly Trekker helmet into the large travel trunk because of the sun visor.
http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...r/8b1805a3.jpg Even though it also has a sun visor, I can more easily fit my GMax GM27 helmet into the large travel trunk, because it is a 3/4-face helmet. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...fL._SY450_.jpg A standard, 3/4-face helmet fits very easily into the large travel trunk. I think it's possible the large, Garage Pro Travel Trunk might hold two, 3/4-face helmets. :) |
