The Britbike experts never mentioned anything about magnesium when instructing me how to have it welded. They surely would have said something. Plus its 1950's English 'technology'. I'm just happy its aluminum rather than limestone. :roll:

And pretty "clean" aluminum at that (fairly easy to weld and machine). It's when they use "dirty" aluminum does anything but R+R become dodgy.

I've located a new cover, stator, timing chain, gasket kit etc.

It's fun to find parts for a bike that's from a company that went out of business 38 years ago! BSA still makes small arms but I doubt they still stock pistons! LOL!

Actually with the internet it's pretty doable. My Chinabike parts finding skills have come in handy for sure. :wink:

Wow! That looks like a good opportunity.

Doc, the reason I brought up the magnesium point was from my (little) experience with old VW buses. I built a '58 23-window with a friend about 10 years ago, and the transaxle I installed had a gusset that needed trimming. Now that I think about it, it was a big-nut transaxle, and it was probably from a late model (meaning early seventies) bus or Thing, so it wasn't nearly as old as the rest of the bus.

I trimmed that gusset very carefully.

Ever hear of Thermite reaction? Great exothermic fun! It was a favorite chemical game of us (geeky science) kids when we were in High School. It involves magnesium and will burn hot enough to melt a hole through the sidewalk. 8O

Ask me how I know... :roll:
