@Molypod, what is your friends bike? I saw a yellow lifan (or lifan clone) up on sumas mountain, wondering if it is anyone from on here...

@Edcole, I didn't get any pictures of the repair process, camera battery died, but I have pictures of all the guts and what was broken, and I will get one of it back on the bike... I will upload them a little later tonight. (Probably good to see before cutting it open, if you do cut it open, cut it back about an inch from the end, not right at the weld on the end, there is a double piece of metal there that holds the insides in... anyways pictures soon.

The stock muffler with the end cut off and internal parts removed.

This is what it looked like when removed, all of these internal pieces were supposed to be attached.

Looking at the front side of the center piece of muffler internal guts.

Looking at the back end of the center piece of the muffler internal guts. One of those holes is supposed to have the pipe that comes out the end of the muffler (it was broken off).

Back on the bike after re-assembly, re-welded, and with a fresh coat of high-heat paint (on the end anyways).

fell off rach'd viva 2 times. and had to be rewelded.

Thanks for the advice and the pics Jim. By the looks of your bench you look like you may do some auto painting? I am in the process of de-stickering and repainting a little on my bike now. Again thanks for the advice.

I did the same to mine a few months back, but it looks like yours went a lot easier. Mine had rivets I had to drill out and I had to use a press to get the guts out.

Looks good back together, how does it sound to you? I like the way mine sounds.

It sounds stock minus the rattle

I did cut it too close to the end, and that second layer of metal there kept the guts from coming out, but my dad ground off some of the end to get it out... So the advice there is to cut back from the end a little (like an inch), I just used a band saw and kept turning it... I didn't see any rivets though, just broken welds, is your muffler different?

@Edcole, well that's in my dad's shop and my brother just repainted his girlfriends camaro (just an 88 or something not special).

His is a Yellow GY-5 with rear drum brake and regular forks with alien head stickers on the bike instead of the GY stickers.

there is a Yellow GY-2 clone that was for sale a couple blocks from my place a few weeks ago.

Maybe it was him, it was actually quite a while ago that I saw it up there, there was no sticker on the headlight piece if I recall correctly. It was the gy5 style, not 2.

I have thought about gutting/reworking my muffler but for right now it is fine and still muffles like it should but when it stops muffling properly it will go under the die grinder and get opened up.

Yes, and a bit of a pain when it comes to removing the guts. I wouldn't go through that effort again since there was only a marginal increase if any in performance. I just drilled the new DB-07B with a 5/8" bit and will probably leave it at that. Dad's is still just drilled too.

Ahh ok, on the lifan, if I wanted more airflow, I would just remove that one pipe that goes into the end (the one that sticks out the back), then it would open it all up alot, that is ofcourse only feasible if you have the muffler already cut open, otherwise the drilling the hole would do the same (well a little bit more I suppose) for allowing more air out.

Yes I have....Developed a rattle after a couple hundred miles of off road punishment. I cut it open and removed the problem arrestor section.
