The 46 tooth sprocket arrived today. One delay for Columbus Day. I will install when I get a chance.

Do you intend to drill out the rivets and transfer the protective ring to the new sprocket? Might save the bolts in the event of chain failure.

I think that may be hard to do. These sprockets (at least the front ones I've tried to drill) are made of a super hard steel.

I haven't tried to drill it, but I think it's about grade 90 steel. I haven't had a chain failure yet. That being said this is Chinese steel.

for drilling the rivets, it would probably be easier to try and grind the heads off of the rivets and punch them out with a chisel... i dont really see the necessity of the ring myself, and my 43t rear doesnt have one, so....LOL just my opinion...

I mounted my 52 dollar Amazon Kenda K270 Dual Sport 2.75-21 on the front. Huge difference. No more oscillation, thank you! The bike is now very stable on road and off.
I was going to install the new rear 46t sprocket, but lost time riding it! |

I'll leave it off as well. I sold my drill press about 7 yrs ago when we moved to the Southeast. Not a job for a handheld drill motor!

I installed the 46 tooth sprocket. Caution!!, This sprocket is NOT milled on the backside for the special bolts. The mounting holes are also too small. If you can't mill the sprocket, and enlarge the holes, do not buy this sprocket. I 'milled' the backside with a steady hand and Makita right angle grinder. Obviously caution and attention must be paid in order not to cut through the sprocket, or grind too much material. That being said, the gearing is perfect for my weight at 175lbs. I can easily do 55-60 without 'winding' out the engine. First is just right for slow terrain. It is like gaining another top gear. I'm happy the gearing is perfect for me at 46 teeth.
The sprocket is not 90 grade steel, somewhat less than 60 is my guess. |

That's a good size. I have no idea what the Chinese were thinking when they fitted these things with a 56. Maybe the intended markets have roads so congested you can't go over 35? Maybe all the roads are built on a 30 degree uphill angle and you are hauling your whole family and a sack of rice?
Even with the 45 on back and the largest sprocket that fits on front mine is geared quite low.

I have an extra 56 tooth around when I bought my new rear wheel (it came with the wheel, and was instantly swapped out for the 40t that didn't get mashed up in the whole ordeal that necessitated the new rear wheel) which will make a good target for the AK, lol.
