I too wish you good luck and to be safe on your adventure. Not sure what time you are planning to do the trip, but i would start maybe March or April just to avoid the heat which is going to be your worst enemy. Test your bike on few short trips with all the gear before the trip.
Check this guys youtube channel. He did Simpson desert on postie and dr650, and has nice setup. His videos are long but otherwise you will learn a lot. https://www.youtube.com/user/BikerBitsAUS/videos Keep us posted.
