i haven't got the tools to drill new countersunk holes in the plate, but I do appreciate the suggestion

Just need a drill and some bits. Counter sunk holes are not too hard. Drill the right diameter for the bolt and then use a larger bit and go partway to create the countersink portion. That is the home version.

A proper countersink bit isnt very costly, and they do a consistent job.
