Valves Valves Valves

Well, this afternoon I rolled over 850 on the odometer. The bike is spunkier now than when I bought it. I suppose its breaking in.

BUT, the valves sound horrible.

AND, the bike revs better than ever.

so what is the deal, why would the bike rev higher and stronger yet the valves sound terrible? are the two related?

i can handle the sound, I just hate the thought that i am ruining the valves.

it reminds me of my first car, a dodge dart with slant-six in it.

Re: Valves Valves Valves

The 2 are not related. Time to adjust the valves even though they will still be somewhat noisy when properly adjusted.

Loose valves = noise = valves not opening quite as far or for quite as long = less power but the difference is so small that you wouldn't notice.

gonna have to scrounge up a feeler guage. I've read over the valve adjustment tutorial and feel pretty confident in being able to do it.

yeah you might as well do it since you'll have to adjust them at some point anyway and it sounds like it needs it.

It's no big deal you'll get it.

yeah fortunately the guys at the dealership did the grinding on the valve cover when they adjusted it so I should be able to get the valve cover off easily. anyone know how big the bolt that connect to the crank is? or should I just tap the kick started to find TDC?

I cant remember right off hand the size socket that is needed but the best/most accurate trouble free way is to use a socket and rachet and turn it slowly by hand.IMO

i did the valve adjustment myself. used the kickstarter to find tdc on the compression stroke. set the valves at .002. Bike sounds much better but is still vibrating while on the road.

will valves need to be done every 500 miles? its an easy job really and a good excuse to take stuff off and have a looksee.

You shouldn't need to do it every 500 miles, maybe every 2000 to 3000.
