New clutch slipping
Hey guys, installed new clutch plates, springs etc, new oil change 15w 40 gulf western motor oil
Still has slight slip top of rev range Have read some blogs saying motorcycle specific oils have additve that avoid clutch slip, but at $70/liter is a bit rich on a $50 engine, i change oils way too often |

Had no idea motor oil was so expensive in Australia. It not that there is an additive in motorcycle oil to prevent clutch slipping, there is an additive in most automotive oil that causes a wet clutch to slip. Do you have Shell Rotella 15w40 for diesel engines over there? It works fine and is inexpensive here in the US.

Ah, the good old argument "motorcycle vs. automotive" oil. You know it's been going since the dawn of the Internet, right?
Anyway, I doubt it's because of the oil. Make sure your clutch cable is properly adjusted, oiled and it's not dragging due to broken threads on some bend somewhere. |

Car oil has anti friction additives because engine only oil systems need everything friction free.
Bikes engine oil goes through the transmission and clutch too so using oils with anti-friction additives coats the clutch packs and can cause them to not grab. Either use moto oil, rotella diesel oil, or any oil that doesnt have "energy conserving" on the API rating mark on the back of an oil bottle. |

Also, did you oil soak the clutch rings for a few hours before installing?

Which 15w-40? At least 3 type in their site
I won't touch this http://www.gulfwestern.com.au/produc...d-15w40-slcf4/ which meets SN/SM http://www.gulfwestern.com.au/product/top-dog-xdo/ seems OK cuz they mentioned Allison C4 (a wet clutch) --- Farm oil / STUO 15w40 works really good in bike. Wet clutch friendly.Meets oldie API that are Obsolete now. Cons: In 20L or 2??L barrel ONLY --- http://www.caltexsorell.com.au/store...ne-oil-5l.html at least works in theory -Good price / Meets SL (SAME grade as those RED helix that favored by chinese m/c taxi jockeys) / Int'l brand unlike that GW

Ok seems there are a few aussie forums dedicated to rotella vs rimula shell oil, clearly australia never had rotella oil, some riders come to same conclusion that motorbike oil is too pricey for frequent oil changes, im going to try shell rimula 15w 40 , clutch cable is new & not binding,

So that's $6 per liter Australian dollar
That's 4.77 per liter USD. Liter is about the same as quart. No fact checkers please In US they call it JASO-MA for wet clutch Rotella 15/40 (dino oil) about $5.29 per qt in USD.
