Dads' US Veterans Honor Flight

My Dad is a Korean Era USMC vet and was chosen for this years' Honor Flight. My younger brother went with him and from what I've heard back is that they both had a great time.

My Dad is the guy in the yellow jacket just right of center and my younger, and retired, brother is behind him.
The past decade has been rough on Dad due Moms' health problems and with her passing last July. Danner, my brothers' nickname, has spent a lot of time with him since Mom died. He said it was a long day for both Dad and him, but he hasn't seen Dad this happy since last August.

As a military vet, I can say this is something I'm glad is being done to honor those who've served.

I'm not familiar with Honor Flights. They flew to South Korea?

No, to DC.

I spoke with Dad yesterday about the trip. He’s usually a crabby old fart on the phone but he was genuinely happy about doing this.

When these flights really started to take off. No pun intended. We hosted one at Donaldson Airpark where I was a pilot and worked as a line service tech. We helped about 50 veterans get on and off the planes. Some of our customers that owned aircraft volunteered their planes for the trip. We covered the fuel. One of our customers provided breakfast onsite. Our airfield was only two hours away by most planes. It was a wonderful experience to get to help them and hear their stories.

Word is that my younger brother thoroughly enjoyed it, too. When Dad called me yesterday, he said that Danners' son called him and wanted to know what he did to his Dad. Danner is pretty laid back and rarely gets excited but I'm told he was bouncing around telling his clan about the trip.

I'm sure the recent events of the Korean issues have stirred a few of those veterans hearts again from their younger years.
