I've tried all the so called liners/sealers. None have ever worked 100%. Save yourself some time and buy a new tank.

Vinegar to remove the rust, and then neutralize it with baking soda water and rinse well. Then add fuel with MMO or Marine Stabil mixed in at the recommended ratio. It leaves a film of oil that helps prevent rust, and it also helps lubricate the throttle slide and needle/needle jet a little bit. If you store the bike, make sure to have a full tank with the previously mentioned stabil in it.
I have de-rusted many tanks and ran this way, never had to de rust them again. Never once used a tank sealer.

I tried the tank liner once. it lasted a couple of years then started to separate from the tank. Basically made the tank useless after because I couldn't all the liner out to redo it.

HB, I don't know how you possibly remember all of the links that you share. Impressive!

If you're not going to use the tank immediately after removing the rust, you can slosh something around inside to seal the fresh steel. Liquid WD-40 will work, although a one gallon can isn't cheap. A quart of diesel would probably work just fine, it's just smelly.

Chip, what is worse that having to remove rust from a tank is having to remove a failed liner from a tank. I agree with the others who don't use liners.

1. Certain sealers will dissolve in simple acetone. 2. MEK (Methyl Etheyl Ketone) will pretty much remove anything that acetone won't, but it is very unfriendly to work with. To me, tank sealers are the devil. A little tiny extra bit of effort with MMO, 2 cycle oil, or Marine Stabil every couple of tanks or so, and not letting a bike sit for any length of time without being completely full, is all it takes to prevent tank rust. For the Hawk it takes about 1.25-1.5oz of MMO per tank to mix at their recommended ratio (4oz per 10gal.) Fun little life hack if you want to run it in every tank, but don't want to carry around a big bottle all the time. Go to WalMart and get yourself some "Travel Size" Scope or other mouthwash bottles. They tend to be around 1.5oz. I always carried one in my burrito tube filled with MMO for when I had to fuel up again. Plus, at $4 a bottle for 32oz, that bottle lasts quite a while and is pretty cheap insurance.
