If these rear brakes are cable operated, that is where the spongy brakes are coming from. Chinese cable housings have more "give" to them than most. If you can adopt H-D/Indian brake cables to your rear brake most of the spongy feel will disappear...ARH

Mine has drum brake with the metal rod.2LZ mine was the other way around,as it was quiet at first then after riding a bit I’d start hearing it from the rear brake...funny lil bikes

Mine's solid rod actuated also. i just think I've been spoiled by disk brakes at this point. My drum still works fine, it's just not as sensitive.

I always said the rear drum on my old Harley was "for display purposes only". ;-) It was awful!
