All Hawks have a black fuel tank. Only the plastics are different in color.

The stage we're at now with 6.5 hours into it and it's still not finished. Installing new carb tomorrow and probably doing the alarm system Thursday.

Just wanna make sure the ignition system works properly before I go to adding the alarm system. I wanna keep everything simple and easy to diagnose.

The used oil in the sauce pan is a classic! Am glad you have your own kitchen. If I did something like that in the mrs kitchen.....when I say I don't get off the farm much, well I would have a trip to some kind of a funny type farm.

The valve adjustment..

Being that it's Jay's bike I sat back and watched as he set the intake and exhaust to .005" for the break in. And with my OCD that was a feat in and of itself. 😅

Side note, the intake valve was screwed down tight and the exhaust valve was actually being held open. I really doubt the bike would have even started in that condition.

Well after he gets both adjusted he has me come over and check the drag on the feeler gauge, which was too much. We then discover he's got the 5 AND 6 blade BOTH out so he's actually setting the lash to .011"!

So he starts the process over again and successfully set both to .005" with the proper amount of drag. He also shimmed the front fender with 4 washers and 2 longer bolts as Dan and I have done.

In his defense, most people screw up setting lash for the first time. I know I did (way back with my lawn mower project as a teenager) and almost everybody I have since shown how to do it. I have even done the accidental stacking goof up that he did, which isn't hard to do when you are tired and dealing with the really thin ones. at least it would have had room to shrink lol.

Was he convinced of the fender shim after seeing his vs. yours side by side? It is such a subtle difference that I often forget that I have done it.

When I was 8yrs old Dad taught me to set lash with a match book cover (which made for some tappy valves) and the same for point gap. But he was born in '29 and I imagine that's what his father taught him. When I was 12 Tim Bobb taught me to set them at .003" and .004" which is a pretty safe bet.

As far as the fender no, we're just trying to do everything proactive as we assemble it, such as the fender, forks, and airbox mod. The one thing we forgot to purchase was marine grease so Jay's bringing some over today along with the 17 tooth sprocket.

I think i pulled a Jay when i did mine, sounded like it had a damn rod knock. Pulled it apart and i didn't have to measure to see the exhaust was way to lose. Now it just sounds like a noisy typewriter.

I'll be shimming my fender on the storm so my oil cooler fits without cutting half of the fender off. Winter project.

matchbook is perfect for a coil/magneto gap, and points... but valves, hehe... .015-.020 is a bit much...LOL

on a side note, my briggs powered deere mower doesnt start with the exhaust valve set to .004... it likes (per the manual) .009-.012 on the exhaust... intake is .004 though...
