I have a 163FML and a 169FML and have found that the stock 169FML has more power than the 163FML.

IMO - I guess that having the AMR CDI on a 163FML being a longer stroke may not seem to have as much of power increase vs the shorter stroke 169FML which revs higher so I guess would be spending more time at the power RPM...

that seems reasonable enough. i am kinda wondering why the bike is so hesitant to start now with the new CDI? Has there been anyone who has had this problem and remedied it? Or anyone who hasn't had this problem and what their setup is?

Try running premium gas. I won't detonate as fast and may allow for an easier start/idle.

I think that more fuel is also needed to make the most of the AMR CDI.

Like I said earlier, I'd leave it off Zap. It is causing the ill starting / idling issues for a reason. To answer your question about hearing the pinging. Probably not while on the road. Between the valve noise and wind noise I would doubt you could hear it, but I guarantee if it is advancing the timing enough to bump the starter, it is causing pre-ignition. Don't waste your money on 104+ or any other octane booster. Those octane boosters claim to bring up the octane 3 or 4 points, but what they don't tell you is that it takes 10 octane POINTS to bring it up ONE octane number. So to go from 87 to 88 octane is TEN octane POINTS. For what it's worth, my advice is to look for safer gains elsewhere unless you are gonna build a full-on race motor and run it on race gas. That's why they list this as a stage III CDI.

I wonder what the stage two box does? Might be better suited for street ridden machines.

I have friends that have race cars. On the cars with very high compression and extreme timing advance, They start cranking the engine with the ignition off. Once the engine is turning over good, they flip the ignition switch on. It would be a hastle to do it all the time on a street/casual trail bike though.

thing is..right before I ordered the stage three I hesitated thinking maybe I should try the stage two. now I feel like a moron. but the thing does boost my power noticeably. I just wish I'd have tried the stage 2.

edit: thanks Red, I think I'll take your advice.

here is an article about detonation. It pertains mostly to cars I believe but it is enough to reaffirm my belief that the box must stay off.

Yeah, I think if you want to throw in some 100 octane LL avgas and go spank your buddies 200 DS, then it might be fun to throw it in once in a while, but over time I am sure this will do damage on pump gas.

Yeah, but you aren't useing the AMR III box, and your engine is also pretty well modded, right? Did your daughter run race fuel in the bike when she raced it? I'm sure an increased timing curve can be had that WILL produce more power somewhere on the curve, but it's always at a cost, as you know. On my Roketa the stock CDI seems tailored perfectly to DS riding. It has good low end grunt, no hesitation off idle and it'll wind as high as you wanna let it. Not sure what else to look for.
